Napolitano: "The system worked"
DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano said that the thwarting of the attempt to blow up the Amsterdam-Detroit flight this week demonstrated that "the system worked."
Asked by CNN's Candy Crowley on "State of the Union" how that could be possible when the young Nigerian who sought to set off the bomb was able to smuggle explosive liquid onto the flight, Napolitano responded: "We're asking the same questions."
Napolitano added that there was "no suggestion that [the bomber] was improperly screened."
So am I....at the fact that a CNN reporter actually dared to ask a Democrat a tough question.
So what is the system? Have we been installing a Dutch tourist on each flight?
...this stupid woman!...it “worked” only because PASSENGERS defended themselves.
The country is in the best of hands.

If she defines the system as one where terrorists are allowed to smuggle then detonate explosive devices aboard airplanes, then by all accounts she’s right. Amazing.
The passengers worked- at that, it seems primarily only one of them.
Ask Napolitano about the citizenry growing a pair and see what she has to say about that.
Oh good. Now that we know that vigilantism is part of the official government “system” (because that was the ONLY thing that worked on that plane), we can start fixing this problem the right way!
(Note: I’m not denouncing vigilantism. I’m denouncing the insane concept of “letting the pros handle it”.)

You mean the “refuse to profile or stop known terrorists from flying and depend on passengers to stop the bomber seconds from detonation” plan.

It’s not just that US authorities had him on the radar but his FATHER reportedly warned authorities. It is absolutely absurd for Napolitano to claim “the system worked” when he actually got on a plane with explosives and it was his fellow passengers, not officials, that resolved the situation.

So....if every single security system put in place to thwart a terrorist fails, and we are reduced to random members of the public (who had absolutely NOTHING to do with the government’s security systems) stopping a terrorist, that is equivalent to the system “working”?

It "worked" because the bomb was a dud. Otherwise it would have had a much different outcome.
If the bomb had worked those people would be dead. They were saved by the intervention of God, and a Duch passenger.

The only reason that we are not counting bodies is because his bomb did not work. After that we have the non-DHS passengers who subdued the RoPer from further attempts.

From the descriptions I read, it wasn’t ‘thwarted’. The explosive didn’t ignite the way the terrorist planned.
If the explosive had gone off as planned, the plane would probably have crashed and nearly 300 people would be dead.
That is hardly ‘thwarted’.
While it was great that the passenger(s) defended themselves, if the bomb would have gone off as planned, they would have all been lost. The only reason they could take down the terrorist was because the bomb failed.
This statement from Napolitano is one of the dumbest I have ever heard a politician make, and she contradicts herself after the reporter asks the tough question. He should have followed up on it.
Sec. Napolitano has obviously been taking her cues from Pres. Obama: whatever happens, claim it’s a success and was always intended to happen that way.
In truth, the system did work, but only because Obama’s administration didn’t have anything to do with it. The passengers took the initiative to insure their safety, rather than hoping our government would have a clue.
American Airlines has a text in red that new security measures are to be implemented after this latest bombing attempt and to be sure to get to the airport earlier.
What else could they possibly do except strip searches. I already have to take off my shoes and my coat. Is my underwear next?
I can see the conversation now between Nap and BO - “BO, we did everything you asked to give the terrorists every break to do their job, but those pesky militia keep getting in g the way!”.
The “knives-with-blades-smaller-than-three-inches-are-OK-because-who-could-use-one-of-them-to-hijack-an-airliner” system worked well about 8 years ago too!

The passengers and crew were also very lucky it didn’t explode before the Dutch man was able to get to the terrorist. He most likely stopped the terrorist from trying to detonate it again, but the passengers were also very lucky or God decided it wasn’t their time.
Maybe that’s the system, let the terrorists get a bomb on the plane, but then rely on the incompetence of the terrorists to detonate the bomb.

That had nothing to do woth DHS, or Napolitano's "system."
She's living in and talking about a fairy tale in an effort to make herself look good somehow in this...but it doesn't wash, either for her or this admin.
Note: This one was not an act of SJS. It was an honest to goodness, planned on foreign shore, terror attack. But we have plenty of the other going around attempting to be played down by the likes of this admin.

He got on a plane with explosives. He should have detonated it over the Atlantic, where it would have taken years to figure out what happened, but, al Qaeda would have known immediately they had success.
