Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said Sunday there was no indication so far that a botched terror attack on a U.S. airliner was part of a broad international effort.
"Right now we have no indication that it is part of anything larger," Napolitano told CNN's "State of the Union" program.
A lone suspect allegedly tried to ignite an explosive device on a Northwest Airlines flight from Amsterdam, The Netherlands to Detroit, Michigan on Christmas Day.
The device apparently failed to detonate and the suspect was subdued.
Napolitano said the suspect, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, was on a broad security watch list that contains "half a million" names and is shared with airlines and foreign security agencies. However, a lack of specific evidence prevented him from being classified as a greater security risk that would bar him from travel to the United States, she said.
"You need information that is specific and credible if you're going to bar people from air travel," Napolitano said.

Of course, if the detonater had functioned properly, the only thing happening would have been the rapid descent of pieces of airplane and people. Lots of people are going to die thanks to morons like Janet Napalitano.
Recently, on the Laura Ingraham show she had a guest who was convinced that if a Supreme Court vacancy should come up that Napolitano would be O’s first choice. I guess he’s crazy about her. I want to say it was Byron York who told Laura. She nearly went nuts.

Yes, by all means, ignore the flames on the aircraft. The system worked perfectly. Have faith, the same system that protected the passengers on the Detroit NorthWest flight, will continue to be followed because it worked so well. Have some kool-aide and you'll feel all better.

Thank God Almighty that we have this arrogant stupid bitch running American security! Why it makes me sleep like a baby at night knowing that there is no longer a terrorist threat to me and my family because of great patriots like Nappy and Ojitsu!
If the state asserts a citizen may not legally operate a motorized vehicle without the State's permission and formal Permit issued, why would a foreign person who has been reported as a likely terrorist have the benefit if the doubt regarding his travel by aircraft?
Maybe some of those at the airline gates confiscating finger nail clippers and strip searching granny, could investigate the thousands of reported terrorists awaiting our attention.
The press was referring to this as an attempted attack. My a$$ attempted, it was carried out but the mixture was wrong. The terrorist attack accomplished the idiots banning blankets and pillows and no standing for an hour before landing. They have again screwed up the system in an effort to make the population think they were doing something. Just like HCR, they felt the need to just pass something just to give “impressions” they were doing something important.
A simple coat worn onto the plane nullifies the blanket and pillow stupidity and the perp was seated when he initiated the mixture and none of his stuff came from the carry on luggage because he had none. Thank God cursory chemistry is only taught to mechanical engineers in England.
In essence, they are trying to figure a way to tie this to global warming ;-)
