Dateline 1871: Chicago Fire Chief Declares--'The System Worked!'
NewsBusters ^ | Mark Finkelstein

Interview with Chicago Fire Chief Alden Brown two days after the Great Chicago Fire:

ALDEN BROWN: One thing I'd like to point out is that the system worked. Everybody played an important role here: the local citizens took appropriate action. Within literally an hour to 90 minutes of the incident occurring, all 128 towns and villages in the Chicago area had been notified to take some special measures in light of what had occurred in Chicago. We instituted new measures on the ground, both in central Chicago and at Mrs. O'Leary's barn, where the fire originated. So the whole process of making sure that we respond properly, correctly and effectively went very smoothly . . . We have no suggestion that Mrs. O'Leary's cow was improperly inspected, but we want to go through and see.

REPORTER: But if Mrs. O'Leary's was properly inspected and yet she started the fire anyway, it doesn't feel that safe.

BROWN: Well, it should. This was one cow of literally thousands of cows in Chicago. And she was stopped before any more damage could be done.

OK, to be entirely accurate, that was not a statement by the Chicago Fire Chief of 1871. It was a very close paraphrasing of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano's interview with Candy Crowley on CNN's State of the Union this morning.

Janet Napolitano has solved the problem. In the future, no one named Mrs. O’Leary will be permitted to own a cow.

I’m a guy who wears a similiar jacket, now I can’t wear it anymore out of fear of being mistaken for her.

With a nod to the analogy, as far as getting to the terrorists this DHS head can’t hit the Broad side of a barn...

The procedures for the 1906 San Francisco earthquake were equally effective.

Janet Napolitano has solved the problem. In the future, all people milking cows will be required to sit on their stools for 60 minutes before commencing milking in order to set the cow at ease. Milk pails must be stowed in the storage compartments prior to beginning milking. And the Milking Security Agency will have Milking Inspectors will walk through all stalls to enforce the new rules prior to each milking.

Napolitano in leather in San Francisco. Don't ask, don't tell.

Now for another thought, the Transamerica Pyramid, pictured behind Napolitano, was one of the planned targets of the second version of Ramzi Yousef's Bojinka Plot, which would have hijacked airliners and crashed them into buildings, after the original plan to use explosives to blow up airliners in flight was determined to be problematic, given the volatility of the explosives. Eventually, Bojinka morphed into the September 11th plot. Now with hardened cockpit doors and other challenges, it seems Al Qaeda has gone back to Yousef's smuggled bombs to blow up airplanes.

The fact that these dipsticks in D.C. have yet to figure out Yousef's lieutenants in Al Qaeda are still trying to make his original plan happen. This is not some one-off, lone bomber event. This is the latest effort in an ongoing 15-year effort.
