When you leave Wal-Mart after making a purchase, you walk past a scanner that sets off an alarm if you haven't paid for something.
And if the alarm goes off at this Wal-Mart, Ed Bauman will want to talk to you.
Ed Bauman, Wal-Mart greeter, says "I'm getting too old for this stuff."
Too old to be punched in the head by a customer who exception to Bauman's questions.
Ed says "when he swang, he got me right here," pointing to the back of his head.
The 69-year-old greeter was at the entrance when a man in red shorts, identified as Skyler Lowery set off the alarm but then refused to stop when Bauman questioned him.
Bauman went outside to get his license but then the guy rips Bauman's clipboard from his hands and goes back inside.
Ed says "I grabbed the clip board back and as I was doing that, he hit me with a doubled-up fist behind my ear."
The 6-foot-2 retired Marine didn't back down.
Ed says "the security officer said if you would have hit him in the jaw the way you hit him in the chest, you would have knocked him out."
Police arrested Lowery who would have faced a charge of misdemeanor battery had Bauman been under 65. But hitting an older person is a felony and Bauman says he still doesn't know why it happened.
The alarm was false and Lowery had a receipt for everything in his bag.
Failing to show the receipt in this case meant the difference between 10 seconds and five years. It would have taken 10 seconds to show the receipt but now he faces up to five years for battery on a person over 65.

A little misleading at the end. There is no duty to show a receipt. The 5 years is for wailing on the greeter.

I’ve had a false alarm too at Wally’s. I just showed them my receipt. Usually happens when you buy a CD or DVD and take it to the front counters. They forget to disarm whatever it is that sets off the alarm.

Just a GREAT story with GREAT video. Looks like the perp was also parked in the handicapped spot. I'd recommend looking into that and, if so, add that hefty fine too.
Punk.

Good point, and I’d be my house it is what happened.
There’d have just been a greasy smear on the ground if I saw him him an old man. Of course, the old man was probably doing a better job than I would have.
To: Stoat
Why not just sentence him to having Bauman beat the hell out of him?

I have never tripped one of those scanners by accident.
The only time they go off is when you have something on you that either did not get voided properly by the clerk, was from another store, or you stole something.
Walmart constantly check those devices to ensure they are working properly.
Common courtesy is wait until you are cleared to go.

I’ve been dinged several times while leaving the store. I show the receipt and go on my way with no problem. It is usually something from the electronic isle that sets off the dinger.
Except when I bought a bag of ice at the counter (Silver City, NM) then picked it up on my way out of the store. No one called me back so I went on my way. I had the receipt ready to show someone but no one showed up.

I too wuld not have stopped for an alarm-I’d let the store folks call the police if they desired while I go about my business. My right from unreasonable search and seizure applies to the authorities, not a proprietor. Store employees, security or otherwise, may not control my actions w/o my permission, which I nor any reasonable person should not give.
If the store alarm system is not operated properly, that is not my problem. As a law-abiding, moral person, I would not have stolen anything and I check my receipt before leaving a cashier to insure all the items I purchased are on the receipt..
The idiot went way wrong by a) returning to the store for whatever reason, b) assaulting the store employee, even worse since the victim was an elder person-meant to be respected, not assaulted.

WTF? People beat up the greeter? How rude! In my view, this sort of behavior indicates that the perp is less than a Person....but then again I'm just another one of those "Evil, Right-Wing Etremists" that we all keep hearing about so I'm given to understand that my opinions don't count.
Undoubtedly the perp will make up a claim that he acted in self defense because the greeter was a racist and said "the N-word" to him. Hopefully Florida Justice will not be thwarted by that sort of ruse.

Good point. They should have done a car search. If I’m on the jury Skyler is guilty.
To: Stoat
Did they check the car? He went to the car and then came back before attacking the Greeter. How do we know that he did not dump a stolen item in the car and the come back?

Did they check the car?Since it appears that the perp was arrested on the spot on a felony charge, I believe that the standard procedure would be to tow the car to the impound lot after it's been searched.
The details of what, if anything, were found in the car may not have made it into the story for a variety of reasons...the poorly-written article suggests that 'reporter laziness' may well be among them.

Too old to be punched in the head by a customer who exception to Bauman's questions.
Does this sentence make any sense?
Sometimes, when the sentence doesn't make sense, I look for a misprint or an omission. I've also learned to analyze the context in order to arrive at the proper contents when what's in front of me doesn't make sense.
In the context of what was being said, I read that statement as "Too old to be punched in the head by a customer who took exception to Bauman's questions.".
The context is important and it led me to conclude that something was missing from the sentence or statement. A missing word is sometimes what happens when your typing gets ahead of what you're thinking. However, proofreading is a writer's best friend.
