Supposedly animals can predict earthquakes......so, I’m wondering if they know the BIG ONE is about to hit San Francisco & have thus moved out of town!
To: TaraP
The sea lions moved in to Fishermas’s Wharf just after the Loma Prieta earthquake, Oct. 17, 1989 (the one that delayed the World Series.
They took over docks where they had never been before, and they’ve been there ever since, sometimes in larger numbers than before. But they have never gone away completely.
That’s why the fuss.

Haven’t they had some pretty weird weather out there the last month or so? I’m all the way across the country and down the continent from there but seems to me there have been a couple of really potent storms come ashore there then make their way ‘cross country. I would expect them to behave differently if the weather was really different. I know in our areas the manatees all head for the power plants when the waters in the bays get cold. If the weather was really rough or cold seems they would head for someplace warmer and quieter.

The deserted piers, once covered with sea lions, are now empty. The sea lions have disappeared from Pier 39 in San Francisco, where there once were hundreds on the end K dock, baffling biologists and disappointing tourists

They’re probably just having seal circle parties at seal bathhouses. Just pour some amyl nitrate in the water and they’ll be fine.

Animals don’t “predict” earthquakes however they can, I suspect, sense small motions in the earth’s crust that are the precursor to a quake. This is hours or maybe a day before the event though. The sea lions probably boogied because of Orcas.

Isn’t there a guy in the bay area named Jim Kirtland, or something like that, that’s been quite good at predicting using animal behavior, tidal charts and the moon’s apogee and perigee charts. He literally reads the paper for any increase in lost animal notices in the want ads as an indicator of predictive animal behavior.

Very cool link - thanks. I grew up in So. San Francisco and remember the sea lions well. It didn’t matter what time of year you went to Pier 39 - there were tons (pun intended) of sea lions hanging around. Odd.

Sea Lion benefits being paid in Schwarzenegger High-value Indeterminate Treasury scrip. They can't buy fish with the IOUs so they moved to Colorado.
The good news is Feinstein is up to be sacrificed to the Bay Area volcano and earthquake transvestite Gaia deity.

Frowning takes 68 muscles.
Smiling takes 6.
Pulling this trigger takes 2.

Just got back from a leisurely drive up the coast.
Plenty of sea lions at Santa Cruz. And the bull elephant seals are still in numbers above San Simeon.
But the local SF press is repeating this story over and over.
