This video of Russian ex-President (now Prime Minister) Vladimir Putin's response to a question about terrorism at a G-8 summit press conference was posted in early 2008. However, his answer is worth noting now in light of Barack Obama's rather dispassionate first response to the Nigerian Christmas Day bomb plot terrorist which came off as sounding like a tepid legalistic statement from a deputy district attorney. Here is a transcipt of the question from a French journalist and the blunt response from Putin which stunned the press conference to silence:
FRENCH JOURNALIST: ...Don't you think that by trying to irradicate terrorism in Chechnya you are going to irradicate the civilian population of Chechnya?
VLADIMIR PUTIN: If you want to become an Islamic fundamentalist and be circumcised, come to Moscow. We are multiconfessional. We have very good specialists. I can recommend one for the operation. He'll make sure nothing grows back.

The Russians have had as their enemies in the past, fanatics who would have killed every last man, woman, and child in their nation. They have a clear understanding of what fanatical Muslims would do to them, and Putin is sending a clear message that he will deal with them without mercy. It wasn’t too long ago that Muslim fanatics invaded a school and raped and murdered students. Just reading about it was ghastly.
In all my years as nursing in a hospital only had one adult circ. It is extremely painful to have done as an adult..took a while before he could even walk well...
Putin has beat Obama at every turn. All the wyt from Poland to Iran and back again. Putin scores 4 Obama= Zero. Obama is in way over his head.Not in the same league at all.
I do have to say that I must give praise to Putin for his reaction to these fanatics. Maybe the spineless wonder we have in our oval office should take some cues from him.

His point was intended to be that the only way to be safe from them was to join them. And the alternative to joining them, the only alternative, was to fight them hard. Which is what he had been receiving a great deal of criticism for, brutal treatment of chechens.

No. Putin said "circumcision" = "obrezanie". He went on to say that in Moscow that operation is performed in such a way that "nothing grows there any more", "nichego bol'she ne vyroslo".
The silence is simply a reflection of the gross directness of the remark. The Western leaders parse their public statements because they are accountable to the Western public. Putin, or Yeltsyn before him, do not seem to have a similar restraint.
This is not the first time Putin employs vulgar idiom to get attention. All of Russia probably remember his Soprano-style "we'll take them down and make them wet" (we'll sodomize them and then kill them", in theif's argot), referring to whoever were the remaining Putin's opponents a that time.

You are probably right on that one.....but remember when Bush looked into his soul and saw a good man? Bush is a good man and I think he saw a reflection of himself, cause Putin is a man I would not want to play bluff with..
I think Bush simply was mistaken.
We are a little jealous right now - Putin is strong and resolute.

Well...yes...and no. My first response is that it's good to hear someone not mince words about Islamic terrorism. Unfortunately, it's coming from Putin, who is IMO the one non-Iranian on the planet most responsible for Iran being close to having nukes and the means to deliver them. Bottom line: He may be truly concerned about Islamic terrorism in his own borders, but he's a facilitator of it elsewhere.
Putin is a dangerous, dangerous man.

Putin is far from original on this. No less than Saint Paul said in essence the same thing (starting with a discussion of circumcision) about his opponents:

Heck, I was circumcised right after I was born and I couldn’t walk for almost two years!
And when I tried to talk all that came out was gibberish for well over a year at least!
