In other news, Obama bought a new boogieboard, and his response to this news on Iran was, “Hang loose.”

Obama will "understand" the travails of the current government in Iran, and will call for calm and reflection. And he will delay any kind of substantive decision for weeks, during which time he will occasionally issue some kind of mild rebuke. The mild rebukes will be juuuuust enough to suggest he is a mullah opponent, while avoiding one iota of support for the Iranian people and reformers.
The mullahs will kill hundreds, or thousands.
There will be no "Ich Bin ein Tehraner" moment for Obama. NONE.

Not unless all the troops are Arabs and not Persian. The only reason the 1979 revolution got anywhere was because the troops would not fire on or harm their kind.

“So the troops are still following orders... too bad.”
Not necessarily. This could be the IRGC not the regular armed forces. If this is the regular army moving in this spells bad news for the opposition

The worst place for the troops to be for the mullahs is in the streets facing their own people. Think about it, most of these troops have never seen action. The Iran/Iraq war nearly wiped out a generation as evidenced as the great majority of Iranian men are 30 years old or less. Fancy marches and parades fade awfully fast when given the order to lock and load. They fade even faster when faced with the personbal decision to fire on unarmed civilians of your own heritage.

Why did you leave Patton’s name out of it. Scores of police/troops were injured and yet there were only four bonus marchers killed so it was not much of a slaughter was it?

Best time for Israel to hit their nukes would be now, while attention and resources are focused elsewhere. It would also be a significant help to the protesters. I wish we had the cajones to help the cause of freedom and take out a threat at the same time, but with our current amateur liberal regime, its up to Israel. I hope they have the stomach.

These civilians are unarmed, I assume. Could be a slaughter coming.
Prayers for the anti-mullah contingent if there is one.
To: Fennie
I wonder if the recent letter signed to the mullah's by the military officers saying they will not intervene in politics reflects the feeling of the majority of the troops?
I'd like to think the regular army (as opposed to the basiji) won't fire on its own people.

The theory that the military of Iran has some magnanimity is hard for me to understand. I understand the Basijis are crazy but why wouldn’t the military be the same. There’s going to be a bloodbath and the opposition will lose.

I understand the Basijis are crazy but why wouldnt the military be the same. Think of the Basijis as ACORN with guns. They are recruited from among the rural poor who are beneficiaries of the Islamic welfare system supported by zakat (Islamic tithes).
The army is recruited from a wider cross-section of Iran's population.

If that’s true, I understand. I believe they will fire on the protesters though and revolution will be squashed, for now. I think it’s going to take a coupe and the military has had plenty of opportunity for that if that’s what they want.
