Megachurch Pastor Asks For Urgent Donations

Warren wants $900,000 by Jan. 1, says church facing budget crisis

Dec . 31, 2009 LAKE FOREST, California - Evangelical pastor Rick Warren appealed to parishioners at his California megachurch Wednesday to help fill a $900,000 deficit by the first of the year.

Warren made the appeal in a letter posted on the Saddleback Church Web site. It begins "Dear Saddleback Family, THIS IS AN URGENT LETTER."

"With 10 percent of our church family out of work due to the recession, our expenses in caring for our community in 2009 rose dramatically while our income stagnated," the letter reads.

did he take a pay cut?

i thought he didn't receive any pay from the church... and i had read that when he made all that money from his books he paid back to the church all of his salary he had earned over the previous 25 years as a pastor...

and i also thought i heard he gave away 90 percent of his book earnings, and he and his wife live on 10 percent of the income...

p.s.--i am not a Rick Warren fan nor am i someone who dislikes him--i have no emotional response to him... after reading some of the posts here, i was thinkimg maybe it wasn't Rick Warren i heard these things about, but i'm pretty sure it was Rick Warren...

"Read Chapter 11 of the 3 translations. They say in effect “if they ask for money they are false”!"

But didn't Paul himself take up a collection in Macedonia and Asia for the poor in Jerusalem? One just need exercise spiritual discretion. The wolves are out there (many on TBN) yet so are sincere sheep.

I admit I don't know much about him or his church. But his situation is typical for quite a few charities. As need arises, donations have fallen, and many of these charities are really hurting.

Didn't the Apostle Paul make tents when things got rought? Career ministries sicken me.

If he doesn’t take a salary, and he already donates 90 percent of his income, then he’s already doing his part.

A lot of churches and charities are having to re-organize their debt and expenses. I assume they are no different. They’ll get through it.

Our church leadership said very little, but from what little they said I know we went through the same. We’re still growing, though, and if you keep motoring forward these things work themselves through.

Ah - a voice of reason. I am surprised at the snarky comments by people because Warren does not fit the mode of some churches. I atteneded his service two years ago and can say - it is not for me!! But it was clear that they have many programs to help others. The reached out to an Anglican group when they lost, via a law suit, their property to the National church. Folks like Warren are going to be on the bad side of someone - because he does so much to reach out - it was a similar failure - in my opinion to GWB - nice guy trying to be an accomidating Christian.

But I don’t know if having a “day job” helps all that much when you have thousands unemployed and desperate.

Most ministers make their living doing what they do. Most don't do it for no salary.

If memory serves; I believe it actually goes like this. At some point in his book sales, Rick stopped taking a salary from Saddleback Church. And after the income reached the astronomical levels which it did, he GAVE BACK an amount equal to ALL THE SALARY he had EVER been paid by Saddleback Church.

As to the current predicament at the church; I have no idea who or what is to blame. However, I believe Rick could probably write a check for $900K without breaking a sweat. Why doesn’t he do THAT, if he REALLY BELIEVES in the charitable work Saddleback is doing?

This moron needs to get some purpose driven into him so everything will be all right.

Rick Warren is a fraud and servant of Satan.

I attend 2 churches one is close by when I can’t get to the other church. It is really too liberal for me, but I do absolutely love my Sunday class teacher. At any rate,
I am going to send them a note on the request for donations that due to increased taxes to fund obamacare, I won’t be able to contribute much

He’s just as evil as Joel Osteen, pointing people away from Christ to some vague purpose that is not tied to glorifying God.
