WASHINGTON (AFP) President Barack Obama was Thursday due to receive initial findings into the botched bombing of a US plane, amid reports that US agencies failed to share key information about the would-be bomber.
According to The Washington Post, the report details how agencies failed to divulge or highlight intelligence gathered about the young Nigerian who allegedly tried to blow up the Northwest plane in mid-air on Christmas Day.
"The right information did not get to the right people -- there's no question about that," a senior intelligence official told the US daily.
"If all known information had been provided, we would have been down a different path."
The suspect, a 23-year-old Nigerian named Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, is said to have tried to blow up the plane during a flight from Amsterdam as it approached Detroit, by setting off explosives stitched into his underwear. The attempt failed when he was stopped by passengers.
Obama, visibly angered by how narrowly tragedy was averted in a country still scarred by the September 11, 2001 attacks, has ordered two full reviews of the security lapses, with an initial report due on his desk Thursday.

Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab is seen in this undated handout, distributed by IntelCenter on December 28, 2009, and accredited to Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula. Abdulmutallab, who was traveling with a valid U.S. visa although he was on a broad U.S. list of possible security threats, was overpowered by passengers and crew on the Northwest Airlines flight 253 from Amsterdam to Detroit on December 25 after setting alight an explosive device attached to his body. Leon and Janet are cleaning out their drawers... he could be waiting awhile. ;-)
Visibly my lilly white butt.
A slightly charred and singed underpants with the explosive packet removed from the crotch is seen in government photos obtained exclusively by ABC News, released to Reuters, December 28, 2009. Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, based in Yemen, said it provided Nigerian suspect Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, 23, with an explosive device to blow up Northwest Airlines flight 253, a Delta-owned Airbus 330, as it approached Detroit on a flight from Amsterdam on Friday with almost 300 people on board. He’s visibly angered because it’s causing him embarassment and forcing attention on a subject he prefers to ignored or leave to underlings - national security.
“Obama awaits intelligence”
About the time hell freezes over, I imagine.
Mr President, as much as it pains me to call you that...
Here is your intelligence report....
You have taken America from a war stance against terrorism to a pre 9-11 stance that all but guarantees we will be hit again and again.
It is not too late to change this.
However your personal ego to make the changes is very likely impossible for you to overcome.
The long term security of this nation will therefore be based upon your removal from office at the soonest possible opportunity.
Impossible - there can be no “intelligence” reports from this administration.
The Obamao Syndicate might have had some decent intelligence had Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab been taken to a nice water board at Gitmo.
Ridiculous beyond human belief!!! I have a soon-to-be 11 year old and HE GETS IT because I hammer it home. We live in Massachusetts...being a conservative white young man living in ultra-liberal Massachusetts...he is growing up rather quickly!
