The Democrats’ worst fear: Terrorism on their watch
POLITICO ^ | 1/1/10 | BEN SMITH & CAROL E. LEE

Posted on 01/01/2010 12:43:36 PM PST by ricks_place

From the time he launched his campaign for president three years ago, Barack Obama had to consider how he would react to the first serious act of terrorism during the campaign, or if he won, on his watch. His fellow Democrats had been thinking about the moment even longer - since the September day in 2001 when attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon defined George W. Bush’s presidency and gave Republicans a decisive advantage on a defining political issue.

And yet the White House’s response to last week’s attempt to blow up a Northwest Airlines flight to Detroit could rank as one of the low points of the new president’s first year. Over the course of five days, Obama’s Obama’ reaction ranged from low-keyed to reassuring to, finally, a vow to find out what went wrong. The episode was a baffling, unforced error in presidential symbolism, hardly a small part of the presidency, and the moment at which yet another of the old political maxims that Obama had sought to transcend – the Democrats’ vulnerability on national security – reasserted itself.

The W.H. response to the attempt to blow up a flight to Detroit could rank as a low point for Barack Obama. Photo: AP

There is a Kenyan Muslim usurper in the white hut. What do people expect?

I really hope they start giving rent controlled apts in Manhattan to muslim terrorists - Manhattan needs more diversity. It is far too white.

Should it keep up and he continue to haltingly address it ... it will sink all other issues. Healthcare, amnesty and others.

It was a defining issue for former President Bush, it will be a defining issue for President Obama also.

...he’s always been soft on Muslim terrorism...we’ve known it all along...recent events have just confirmed it...his behavior would be gold in the hands of a Lee Atwater...unfortunately, there’s nobody in the GOP with the guts to use the sledgehammer Obama has given us.

They should get down on their knees and thank-God that Bush spent 7 years trying to make sure this country was safe because at least we got a warning of what is to come! Bush didn’t get that instead he got 8 years of Clinton calling terrorist attacks “crimes” and we got hit hard on 9/11 because of it!

agreed open some projects to muslims and minorities to the areas in Manhatten along wiht Chappaqua Westchester county NY

They keep saying how they love diversity so lets give it to them .

What they would either leave or fight this because they don’t want that, but but but they said they love diversity.

Maybe they could move into a ghetto seeing as they love all these people who don’t speak the language, have different traditions and want to open mosques right next door to them

There have already been at least 2 undeniable terror incidents. Flight 253 and Fort Hood. Turns out they are connected.

Bam cannot be happy about this, it exposes his naivete, he loses popularity and takes his eye off the social restructuring initiatives.

As they will attempt to just sweep it under the rug and treat it like a crime, we are setting ourselves up for a real bad attack.

Not good.

Not only was the response weak, it was wrong. Letting Panybomber lawyerup, call it in isolated incident, and not halting all plans to transfer GITMO detainees to Yemen.

The Zero cannot learn because he is too stupid to admit mistakes even to himself.

the obamites don't believe that there is a war on terror. the muslim extremists are right, and their attacks on us are caused by george bush's foreign policy.

not sure how they are going to explain the lack of love now that The One is in office.

This article is a psyop attempt to mute the impacts of the Obama administration's incompetano response.

The muted response, allies said, was aimed at denying al Qaeda a propaganda victory, and at demonstrating how little the terrorists can now disrupt Americans’ lives. “The president and his team have done a good job at handling the situation given the competing interests at play. He’s been forceful without the bellicose chest bumping of the last administration,” said Jim Manley, the chief spokesman for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid. “One thing he’s got going for him is Republicans have no credibility on this issue when their sending out former Vice President Cheney you know they’ve hit the bottom of the barrel.”

The bias from Politico oozes from how matter-of-factly they report the "lack" of Republican credibility on fighting terrorism, as if they wished everyone to believe this to be the case.

It’s interesting that we did not have an incident such as the crotch bomber on Bush’s watch. He made sure these guys were nabbed before they had a chance to get anywhere.

So here we have the Obummer admin. that terrorizes the CIA, and is too busy being suspitious of conservatives, former service members, pro-lifers, lawful gun owners, free marketers, etc... And we have two terrorist incidents less than 6 mos. apart within the first year.

Sounds like epic fail to me, but then again I heard much of the same liberal crap back in the 70s and it didn’t work then either.

At this point, they're still fairly successful at blaming it on Bush, and that'll be the tactic if we get hit.

Obama already started it in his 2nd speech about the Detroit incident, when he said that 'the policies in place for the past several years had failed', and that he was gonna fix 'em.

Doesn't matter that he's been there almost a year, it's what happened BEFORE he became president that's responsible for the breakdowns.

Sooner or later, he won't be able to get away with this, but I'm afraid too many people are still to much asleep to hold his sorry, cocoa-colored butt responsible.

Obama was just being the Muslim he is! Does the left-leaning Politico actually believe Hussein would criticize his people?? Indeed not, as he and the rest of the radical left have far too much in common with the Islamic terrorists—abject hatred for the US, contempt for the American people, arrogance and breathtaking self-important attitudes and the belief that it is their birthright to RULE!!

If that were true, his Homeland Security appointment wouldn’t be ever so close to finding herself on the street. I don’t think they are being successful at all in pinning this on Bush.

They are being reactive, sputtering, defensive and all around indicating by their behavior that they know they screwed up the optics of this before the People.

I’d rather they be less interested in the politics and more on the substance of targeting the would be perpetrators and finally taking this War (for it is one) seriously. Yet as Politico indicates they see it merely as a lost political opportunity which is all they regard Bush’s response to 9-11 to be. Wise strategery that netted him political capitol that helped him to a second term.

I agree in part.

At least they reported that Zero rushed his friend’s kid to the hospital in a presidential motorcade showing how seriously he took a friend’s kid’s medical condition. The kid was more important to Zero than the 200+ people on the flight. Zero is a socialist elitist and this report gives another example of it.

Zero and his White House are like Louis the XIV and his Court except for the lack of competence on the part of Zero and the White House.

However, Politico should have talked to the GOP to allow them to respond to the Cheney statement.

The executive branch has eliminated some of its own power by insisting that a terrorist act be treated as a criminal matter.

If Obama were truly angry, and he's obviously not, what could he do? He can't interrogate the perp, he can't vow to "do everything he can" to protect the American people, he's limited his own ability to act.

This particular episode has made it clear to the American people that Obama is too weak to be President. The moves to close Guantanamo, send Khalid Sheik Mohammad to New York for trial, and now to afford an enemy attacker all the rights of our court system, reveal themselves to have some serious political backlash, effectively neutering the executive branch in the event of a terrorist attack.

To quote a famous Chicago preacher- the chickens have "come home to roost".

No, adults were in charge of the White House then. While there was plenty of discussion in forums like this, especially about the Gorelick “wall” and Clinton’s supposed spurning of an offer by Sudan to turn over bin Laden. (now controversial, because Clinton recanted an early admission of this, claiming that he ‘misspoke’...)

But the Bush administration pointedly refused to “failures of the previous adminstration” game that Obama and cronies have perfected to a science.

Historically, incoming presidents “man-up” and go about fixing problems that exist rather than going back in time to try to blame their predecessors for everything that goes wrong.

For Obama, not so much...

Right. That was on Dec. 21, 2001, 3 mos after we realized that terrorism is far larger problem than we thought and the TSA hadn’t taken responsibility for airline security. That was a different world than the one Bush came to build that Obama promised to undo, which he obviously has.
