Clemson takes no prisoners fighting squirrels

Clemson University is fighting back against an invasion of squirrels on its South Carolina campus.

The Anderson Independent-Mail reports workers spent much of December trapping Eastern gray squirrels, catching and euthanizing the 200 rodents allowed under federal law.

The squirrels have caused problems in recent years, killing about 100 mature trees by chewing on the bark for food and making their territory. About 10 percent of the campus' trees have been damaged in some way, likely costing the school about $1 million in the past decade. Clemson officials tried a squirrel birth control program, but it didn't do enough to curb the population.

Biologists estimate the 800-acre campus has two to three times the normal population of squirrels per acre.

Now that’s funny - maybe they should just arrange a squirrel exchange, like a prisoner exchange.

Actually, squirrels are from outer space. Have you ever seen one fall and hit the ground? He immediately jumps up and runs up the tree into one of those ridiculas nests and beams up to the mother ship for repairs. Maybe their androids.

Where did they find those itty bitty little condoms?

According to a story on FR the other day, the men in India would like to know where they can get those, too.

One of my friends grew up with a dad who hunted all kinds of wild game - her family terrorized her once at supper by hiding a squirrel head on a platter, then poking it in her face. They all got quite a big laugh! My friend, not so much.

Slip a slinky over the pole your birdfeeder is on, with one end fixed to the top so it hangs loose. For some reason squirrels don’t like trying to climb over those things. Or, put Tanglefoot [a sticky substance sold by garden centers which is used to catch coddling moths] on the pole. Cooking spray or oil works too but make sure it stays greasy when frozen and use a smooth pole like skinny PVC.

I captured 4 took them at least 5 miles away across a river and busy bridge. Finally got the hole in my attic sealed up, no new noise up there, but just saw two in a mating dance out back. This was a big year for acorns in my region. Probably helps a big population surge. Clemson needs to tell people to stop feeding them.
