Royal Navy to allow women to serve on submarines

Women could soon be allowed to serve on Royal Navy submarines for the first time.

Senior naval figures have opposed allowing women on subs due to the cramped conditions on board and the dangers posed by fumes inside the vessels to a foetus if a woman is pregnant.

But a review of the ban was ordered last year following pressure from Labour figures keen to introduce full equal opportunities for women in the Armed Forces.

The Royal Navy's new Astute attack submarines could easily be adapted to accommodate women and the Ministry of Defence has said that in the design of the new Trident nuclear subs 'consideration will be given to the possibility of women serving in the future'.

A ministry of Defence source told the Sunday Times: 'It looks likely that women will be allowed to serve on submarines.'

I know there’s a “mile-high-club”. Is there a Kilometer-deep-club?

My thoughts..........

LOL

I can only say that our experiences on ships have been mixed. I am Army, and old school, so I don't see a benefit to this nonsense and never have.

As far as subs are concerned, I think they already have serious issues with personnel in the American Navy sub fleet with all the accidents at sea of late. I hope they don't follow suit. This is not necessary and adds a problem that has here to fore been avoided.

They will be given special quarters which will lead to a collapse of crew cohesion.

You got 4 heads for 100 guys and you take one away for 10 women, or you have 2 showers for 100 guys and you take away one for 10 women.

Its a bad idea.

Dumb@ss idea. Most will end up pregnant. I say this from what I witnessed as a female in the military.

I'm opposed - I'm opposed to sea duty for women altogether - in subs I think all the problems that arise in intra-personal dynamics from living in close quarters and long separation from loved ones will be exacerbated by the presence of female crew members.

What will they do when a pregnancy happens while running silent for extended missions? Will they call time out, and make port to drop her off? Some of these boats “disappear” for months on station.

With the CNO and Chairman of the Joint Staff both from the surface community and major diversity supporters, the submarine force was an easy target.

The only submarines being considered as the prototype platforms for this initiative are the SSBNs and SSGNs, not the SSNs.

The unit punishment logs are getting ready to increase in thickness on these platforms...
