China has sentenced a Tibetan Buddhist lama to more than eight years in jail for illegal possession of ammunition and embezzlement.
The monk, Phurbu Tsering Rinpoche, denies all charges, his lawyer said.
The man described as a Living Buddha was arrested after nuns at his temple protested against a crackdown on Tibetan Buddhism.
This had followed anti-China riots that erupted in Lhasa in 2008 and spread through the Himalayan region. Delay
Phurbu Tsering Rinpoche "was charged with illegal possession of ammunition and embezzlement, but he denied all charges," lawyer Jiang Tianyong told AFP. He had been arrested on 18 May 2008, a few days after more than 80 nuns in Ganzi held a demonstration against an official campaign to impose "patriotic re-education" on their convents, in which they were required to denounce Tibet's spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama.
"He was tried in April and the sentence had been scheduled to be read out days later, but for some unknown reason it was postponed until 23 December," he added. The 53-year-old monk has not decided if he will appeal against the verdict, Mr Jiang said; he added that he had not been allowed to attend the court.
Phurbu Tsering is a "living Buddha" from Ganzi, a part of southwest China's Sichuan province dominated by ethnic Tibetans.

Doesn't that just figure? But Mad'ame Hildebeast has assured the Butchers of Beijing that human rights will not interfere with business.

Attack on an American volunteer by anti-Carrefour mob in Zhuzhou, Hunan

One wonders if Liberty is actually abhorant to those who now knuckle under to Obama here in the USA , and who are practising Tibetan Buddhists.
Obama would not allow the Dalai Lama a courtesy visit to the White House. Goodbye Taiwan?
Obama is a suck a$$ nationalist socialist totalitarian. He doesn't give a $hit about liberty either here at home or abroad. How do I know? Obama still has not acknowledged Bush's accomplishment of liberating 57 million Iraqis from tyranny.
Obama's weakness now allows China to increase its strangle hold on Tibet, now writhing in its last gasps of cultural death, without any cost at all, not even a whimper from a pretend president whose fortitude is non existant. In short Obama has no balls, or if he ever did, they have been so compromised that they are likely tucked so far up his rectum that he thinks they are pieces of his own feces, perhaps mere hemorrhoids. A mistake of great accuracy because he is exactly that, liberty's hemorrhoid.
I am growing to detest our pretend president. He is a curse on humanity and its natural desire for freedom and liberty. Obama is no American. He is a submissive, born abroad foreigner whose time of any romatic usefulness, even to those who took his MSM trolled romantic bait, is now over.
I detest the wages that the Tibetan people must ow pay in a butchers bill because of Obamas weakness and disregard for individual liberty here at home and abroad.May he be cursed and live on only in infamy because of it.
Never mind the real world experience of communism and socialism of the past century. How do they square the basic principles of Marxism with the clearly antithetical principles of the Dharma? Do they view the law of karma as a quaint superstition the way non-Buddhists do? Is inter-dependent origination a joke?
Those are rhetorical questions. I know you may feel as hesitant as I do about voicing your feelings about it so I don't hold an expectation of a reply in kind. I know this though; my teacher is so grieved by the mindset of Buddhists like that that he dreads having to have any contact with them at all.
"They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety." - Benjamin Franklin
It seems to me a Buddhist would more likely say it this way...
"They whocangive up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safetyare forging the chains of their own enslavement."
And what of the karma of empowering government to take from your neighbor by force and give to those you feel deserve the fruits of their labors more? What is the inevitable consequence of making doctor's and nurse's decisions subordinate to bureaucratic panels? How complicated is that chain of cause and effect?
Fogeddaboudit!
Glad I wasn't drinking anything when that post loaded. ;-)
