NFL To Investigate Colts For Tanking Game Against Jets
The Business Insider ^ | 1/3/10 | Henry Blodget

The NFL flaps its gums to appease Colts fans forced to watch their team tank last week's game against the Jets, blowing their perfect season.

MIAMI (AP) -- Commissioner Roger Goodell says the NFL competition committee will review league policy regarding late-season games where teams might be tempted to rest their starters for the playoffs.

Goodell said the league was sensitive to criticism in the wake of the Indianapolis Colts' decision to use backups a week ago in a game they lost, ending their bid for a perfect season.

''It is something we'll look at,'' Goodell said Sunday. ''We heard the fans loud and clear. It's something our competition committee has looked at in the past, but we're going to ask our competition committee to look at it again in the future. We want every game to be competitive.''

Please! Anything but that! The Regress could figure out a way to lose a hand of 5-stud, holding a royal flush.

Its a waste of time, Try police anyone tanking and the competitors just make it more ambiguous. Peyton could feign an injury.

NFL and advertisers worried about TVs turned off when the teams pull their stars.

Isn’t that the same sort of thing NO Saints overtly did today?

“NFL and advertisers worried about TVs turned off when the teams pull their stars.”

They should ask for a bail-out or a cram-down... or a Obama kickback.

They didn’t violate the rules, and resting starters has always been a valid strategy. This is all a reflection of no one having the stones to just say too bad that’s the way it goes.

Now I read they may give a team extra draft picks just for playing its starters? That is outrageous.

Here's the no-brainer solution: Switch back to a 14-game season.

That means every game will go down to the wire and will be hard-fought.

The last 2 games of the season are meaningless. Get rid of them, get rid of 2 of the preseason games, and have a bye week for all teams halfway into the season. Throw in two extra wild-card berths per conference and give all playoff teams a bye week before the playoffs start. Pefect!!

Playing second sting is bad strategy? Especially when you are trying to win a Super bowl? Strategy is what it is all about.

All they have to do is make the playoff seeding based on the winning percentage over the final four games - i.e., the #6 team that goes 4-0 in December gets the #1 seed over the 15-1 team, even if they finish 9-7 overall. The six top overall records still get in, but the seeding is determined by December performance.

Does that mean they will look to see why the Redskins tanked so many of their games also? Or the Rams?

Poor headline. The league isn’t investigating the Colts, they’re just (once again) going to try to figure out a way to keep teams from resting their players in meaningless regular season games. This comes up every season around now, and the nothing will happen because there’s no feasible rule to right and enforce. Unless you outlaw all forms of missed games and missed downs there’s just no way to keep teams from resting players, the most you can do is force teams to declare guys injured when they aren’t.

For the Colts even in a 14 game season the last 2 games would have been meaningless. They locked up home-field throughout when they hit 12-0. And of course for many teams (7 teams in the AFC) the season came down to the last down, many the last down of somebody else’s game even.
