Skip to comments.Statewide Anthrax Scare- Suspicious powder mailed to 3 Alabama Republican Congressmen

|The Joint Terrorism Task Force is investigating a statewide anthrax scare. Local lawmakers are among the targets.
Letters with white powder were sent to the offices of Senators Richard Shelby and Jeff Sessions and Congressman Jo Bonner around the state.
The 15th floor of the RSA Tower in downtown Mobile, where one of Bonner's offices is located, has been evacuated as a precaution. So has Bonner's office in Foley. It's located in a shopping center on McKenzie Street. More than a dozen businesses, including the News 5 bureau, have also been evacuated.
The FBI says everything they've tested so far has come back negative. At this point, they say there is no reason to be alarmed.
The Robert Vance Federal Building in Birmingham will be closed until Wednesday because of an anthrax scare. An employee catching up on work discovered an envelope containing white powder over the weekend. Initial tests for anthrax were negative, but five people are being treated with antibiotics after potentially being exposed to the substance. The building houses the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for Birmingham.
The FBI says a suspicious letter was also received Monday at the federal Courthouse in Anniston.
The FBI will release more information during a 2pm news conference in downtown Mobile.
|Domestic Terrorism ...
Is the Homeland Defense Act still applicable here if the envelopes were mailed off before Dec. 31?
The system is working.
Another isolated incident. (or three . . .)
Don’t worry, the “system worked”, this is an “isolated incident” and there is no such thing as a war of terror.
And the reason all mail is not radiation-sterilized before handling and delivery is...
Headline is misleading. Implies the anthrax was mailed from the Republican congressmen’s offices.
I get the impression sometimes that print media headline writers couldn’t compose a proper english sentence fragment if a gun were held to their collective heads.
Why does the headline read as if the Three Alabama Republican Congressment DID the mailing?
To this day, it is claimed that the Boca Raton Anthrax attacks right after 9/11/01 had NOTHING to do with Islamic Terrorism.
Yet the victim in that attack was the husband of the realtor who had obtained Mohammed Ata’s apartment.
And now, another Anthrax attack immediately following a spate of Islaofascist attacks on on our country?
What profound coincidences.
Yeah, I think the MSM journalism schools offer special training on such sophistry:
"employ the ambiguous passive participle whenever the stupid sheeple are likely to interpret it as the past tense verb form, thereby slandering the 'R' under discussion."
VERY good point!
The way the headline reads is they mailed it not they received it.
Did they have taxpayers pick up the postage? < /sarc >
I thought that, too. The original source has change it. Good word to those that complained.
USA Today did something similar with an article that described Republicans as "Vow[ing] to crush Obama's" this or that. It was a deceptive title. I called them on it and they changed it.
What conservatives have to keep in mind is that they have to work much harder than leftists to force the press to be fair.
And little things count, too. Just getting a headline change makes a difference.
"No one could make a greater mistake than he who did nothing because he could do only a little." -- Edmund Burke
My first impression as well.
Deliberate attempt to mislead.
Admin Mod - please change headline to read:
“Suspicious powder (Anthrax?) mailed to 3 Alabama Republican Congressmen”
Probably done by Texas fans......
No doubt ... they have mail priv’s ....
Ok. Maybe just sterilize mail to federal officies.
Ok. Maybe just sterilize mail to federal offices.
“The system is working.”
A great line that I will fear will be used many times in the next year.
“The system is working.” So sayeth Bagdad Butch.
Ping to the Left turning fascist.
Did I mention the POTUS is replacing Tiger Woods; so expect to see more of him on Wide World of Golf? He has to win the Masters ya know.
The worst case of false anthrax scare happened in the fall of 2001 when some stupid women at Planned Parenthood ran off several hundred thousand envelopes made up to look like what they thought an anthrax letter might, and then sent them to "members/subscribers/customers"?.
They cooked up a second such mailing but got stopped before it happened.
NO ONE WAS PROSECUTED. A guy mailed a couple of dozen fake letters about the same time and the FBI/ATF etc. sent him up the river for over 20 years.
Remember that ~ FBI/ATF are afraid of planned parenthood.
The system is working.
And....there was no smoking gun!
We should get some info soon to find out what this stuff is.
Muslim terrorists were responsible for the first anthrax mailing scare—with real anthrax.
This looks to me like another harmless white powder episode. Most likely a bunch of leftist moonbats mailing powder to congressional conservatives because they hate Republicans.
IMHO,FWIW, I have always thought Saddam orchestrated the anthrax attacks as a threat to GWB not to attack him and Iraq in retaliation for harboring and letting the 9-11 attackers stay-and-play at Salmon Pac, along with GWB messin’ up the little Oil-For-Food scam he had going. It let GWB know the terrorists had the stuff, and how easy it could get passed around if Saddam wanted to do it.
GWB and our US Gov’t could not let that info EVER GET OUT due to the mass panic and economic damage it would have done to the country.
I also believe that this is why the dems used the “NO WMD’S”
arguement to defeat “GWB’s Iraq War”. They knew he couldn’t tell the REAL REASON why, so the dems, with the help of the lame stream media, start the “No WMD’s” stuff, until it became a “truth”, with no way for GWB to fight back, and the dems not getting blamed for starting the rumor.
OK, sorry for the rant. I’m going to take my meds, remove my tin foil hat and asbestos suit, and return this thread back to regular FR postings.
1. Added Cost
2. Public Fear
3. Postal Workers being trusted with multi-Curie sources? Seriesly?
25% of USPS employees are Veterans who we trusted with the security of our nation.
Think this is a coincidence that the targets are 3 Republicans? Liberals are getting nervous about the 2010 elections.
Oh, there’s a smoking gun, they just don’t realize how smoking it is.
It doesn’t matter, republican, democrat, we’re getting rid of all the anti-freedom, anti-constitutional representatives. They are all fair game.
Maybe the letters came from Austin..home of Texas University...a pre game prank :)
Makes perfect sense to me, musicman.
Thank you for your reply to my post.
My pleasure. Do You play music, musicman?
Let the FBI or NSA have custody of the sterilizing devices and the surrounding transport of mail in/out.
Yes. I can play chords, (never bothered to learn any lead stuff because I always considered that “someone else’s job”) on the guitar (1985 Les Paul Custom (Fire Red ) and my REAL favorite(s) (I have 2, a 1975 &76) Maple Glo 4001 Rickenbacker bass.
At one time (for about 22 years), I had an F-412 Guild. I loved it. I sold it and have regretted it ever since, but it went to a great home and a player much more talented on the instrument than I considered myself to be.
(I noticed in your tag lime that you play bass also!)
I was looking at F-412’s on eBay just the other day. One sold in near mint condition for $1800. With those bright maple sides and big body I imagine they must sound incredible — zingy and deep at the same time.
