“Why would a mountain lion attack a child?” Tasty snack, about the right size, no claws, not a ferocious fighter. For a start.

It’s quite shocking when placid laid-back Golden’s go feral-crazy-mad dog when their families are in danger. You just don’t think they have it in them. But they do.

Now why would this cat attack a child? Are food supplies low? Reminds me of the coyotes coming after children in the LA area.

Cougars are predators. They'll take whatever prey they find handy at the time. There's no question that a cougar would see a human child as easy prey.

As more and more places adopt laws that ban hound-hunting for cougars (like WA did)... I don't know what BC has done on this, but I wonder if in fact they still allow hound hunting up there. One effect that hound hunting has is to teach cougars to avoid the sound of barking dogs. This keeps them generally out of neighborhoods. But when there is no hound-hunting they lose their fear of barking dogs... they move into those places and find lots of good food around. Cats, dogs, children... all easy prey.

But kudos to Angel. Very, very good boy. He needs to get some special treats.

“Mountain lions have lost their fear of man in many areas.”

#############

If they ever had any fear at all, when hungry. When I was a very small kid, I had a “panther” yowling at me and my Aunt as we walked home in the dark, in Northern NM. He growled and we could hear him in the trees as he tracked us.

I remember her words to this day, “Don’t run, walk slowly”. That cat tracked us until we got within sight of the ranch house with lights on and yelled for help. Don’t know why he didn’t attack and I don’t want to know. I guess we were lucky.

A hungry or sick animal will attack and eat you. PETA should take note.

Yes, they do. Best dog breed all around IMHO. I’ve had two so far and both were lovers (clinically co-dependant) but protectors.

My two (Luke and Kate) each have a dog bed at the foot of my own bed. I sleep very soundly at night. :-)

Good doggie!

We own three medium-small dogs and I’ve always wondered how they would react should family members face a genuine threat.

Something tells me “the girls” would switch from being lap-warming slugs to unstopple warriors in less than a heartbeat. Hopefully we’ll never find out.

Truly man’s best friend, for thousands of years.

I’m glad the dog is going to be ok, she should get the cougar’s paws for chew toys. I’d hate to think of what would have happened to that lad if he hadn’t had his “Angel” at his side.

Goldens are certainly a revelation-

After we lost our old Taffy-girl

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/chat/1777582/posts

we went to animal control and got what they claimed was a “six-month old Collie puppy...”

Turned out he was 4 months old- and a Golden Retriever.

Mind you, I had my suspicions they were lying when they first brought him out after we paid for him-

He bit everybody’s ankles,

and zoomed out the front door, heading for the busiest highway in the county...

They got him captured before he became roadkill, and rode home peacefully, and then, as wife Miss Emily put it:

” Backhoe and I are the proud parents of a baby boy named Cole. He is a part collie puppy and so far has:

rearranged most of our throw rugs
stolen a pair of Backhoe’s shoes
discovered that heaters are hot
had diarrhea twice
thrown up once
scared the daylights out of our cockatiel
tried to eat my heating pad
stolen my foot massager

and he’s only been here an hour and a half.

The house is no longer too quiet.
Puppies do sleep, don’t they?????”

Well, the “collie puppy” wasn’t quite accurate, but she nailed one aspect no-one else seemed to notice— he’s a born thief— steals money out of people’s pockets. And hankies, and mechanic’s rags, and anything else he can get his poking muzzle on.

I’ve never had a dog quite like him- he’s either so laid-back he’s comatose, or a ball of chain lightning.

He is absolutely devoted to Miss Emily, to the point I call him “her symbiote.” They are inseparable.

Yea, but this was in Canada, you could get a shotgun with enough paperwork, safe storage etc but by the time you unlocked it, found the ammo, loaded it and got to the dog the Mt lion would have finished it’s meal.

A dog is the first line of defense. After the dog hit the cat, it was up to the owner to back up the dog.

At least it all ended well.

Colorado is an open carry state so no excuses here if a Mtn Lion eats you when you are on a fire wood run!
