NFL Coaching News: Mike Leach to the Oakland Raiders?
Bleacher Report ^ | January 04, 2010 | Dumont Walker

Posted on 01/04/2010 9:35:04 PM PST by Paleo Conservative

Today has been nothing short of amazing it terms of NFL news. Things have been especially entertaining here in the Washington D.C. area, where the Washington Redskins always keep you busy during the offseason. However, this bit of news comes from the other side of the country, all the way in Oakland.

According to sources at the Dan Patrick Show, the Oakland Raiders are very interested in former Texas Tech head coach Mike Leach. While it would be a surprising move, it would actually make some sense.

Current Raiders' coach Tom Cable has been under fire all season, beginning with an incident in which he may or may not have broken the jaw of his assistants during training camp. Combine that with a losing record and the revolving door at quarterback, and you have a man who could be on his way out.

In Mike Leach, you also have a man who is surrounded by controversy. His issues stem from dealing with kids at Texas Tech.

The Raiders have proved in the past that they are not afraid to dip into the college ranks for a coach. In Mike Leach, they get a quirky guy, but a pretty good football coach. Leach is best known for his innovative, pass happy offense that has lit up the Big 12 South for the past 10 seasons. It is no secret that Oakland Raiders owner Al Davis loves the vertical passing game. From that perspective, hiring Leach should be a match made in heaven.

Let's just hope this pass happy college coach fairs better than the last one who made the jump to the NFL. Remember Steve Spurrier's NFL experiment? Washington Redskin fans do.

...and it wasn’t a shed. It had a Plasma tv! It was dark, and air conditioned, but that is good for concussions!

Leach didn’t lock anyone in a shed. Thats BS by disgruntled player.

You are technically correct. According to the trainer's sworn affidavit, he (the trainer) was told by Leach to lock up Adam James. So, no, Leach did not personally put James in a small, dark room, shut the door, and lock it. The trainer did that per Leach's instructions.

I'm amazed that the Raiders are able to get anyone interested in their HC position, even this guy. It's not a job where coaches can win - even if Al Davis could be persuaded to turn over control of player personnel, he'll punish any head coach who actually wins in spite of him simply because he can't stand being overshadowed. Just ask Jon Gruden.

Leach’s gimmicky offense, his lack of a coherent defense and his penchant for going on 4th down all over the field would spell disaster in the NFL. Not to mention that Leach’s offense is almost the antithesis of the “vertical passing game”. It’s almost the “horizontal passing game” although the last success the Raiders had was when they used the West Coast Offense which is another system that emphasizes short passes.

Leach would certainly be an entertaining thought while in Oakland but he might also make the worst transition from college to pro since Steve Spurrier.

Leach might be successful there if he could lock Al Davis in a broom closet while personnel decisions are being made.

Al Davis has always been pretty good at finding talent.

Have to disagree, lonestar. I think Jerry Jones supports his coaches and players very well. He just cuts them loose when they fail to perform or cause problems (Terrell Owens for example). ....Steinbrenner who owns the Yankees is probably the most overbearing owner of a sports team, but considering what enormous salaries he pays the players and coaches I can’t say that I blame him. It’s his money that he uses to try to buy the World Series every year.

Mike Leach is being crucified in the press. From TV news and articles I’ve read, the James kid showed up on the sidelines in street clothes and shades during practice. The coach had the trainers take him to a darkened training room and there were a couple of trainers in the room with him. It was to keep him out of the bright light since he had a concussion. .....That’s my understanding of the situation.

I think Jerry Jones supports his coaches...

Tom Landry? That's why I hate JJ....that, and he made fun of Dallas and Texas when he bought the Cowboys.

I haven't like the Cowboys since JJ bought the team

I loved when Jerry Jones and Jimmy Johnson had their clash of the egos...and Johnson quit.

Jerry Jones is an obnoxious jerk in my book.

I agree with your Leach opinion. My guess is that Leach had had all he could take from that little James a$$hole and his father who was always calling.

I agree, it would be a great match, right in there with the Raiders image.

And the Raiders right now aren’t far away from being a respectable team, they beat some good teams, but were woefully inconsistent. I like Gradkowski as a QB, with Leach, he could become even better.

I’d be happy for Leach *IF* Davis let him do what he wanted in terms of player personnel. No way Leach would keep jamarcus Russell. Since Davis didn’t like Tom Cable’s remarks against Russell, I doubt Leach will be a serious contender. Davis will only hire a coach who thinks Russell is a good QB. Good luck with that!

They are a pack of lies. The sworn affidavits by the trainer and doc contradict earlier statements. James’ own video shows he lied about it all. He said he was locked in with no chairs. His own video shows chairs to sit in as well as a door that had the lock from the inside.

I believe a sworn affadavit. There is a consequence for lying under oath. Any of the other stuff that was said before is just so much lip flapping.

And for the record I don’t care about Mike Leach and The Aggies one way or the other

Obviously. Its the Red Raiders, not Aggies. In Texas, you’d be lynched for that mistake. ;)

BTW, Leach never told the trainer to put him in that garage. He said put him in a dark place. The trainer chose the location.
