ANTI-whaling group Sea Shepherd have confirmed one of their protest ships was sunk by Japanese whalers.
The Ady Gil, a lightweight 24m (79-foot) boat went under after being rammed off Antarctica by Shonam Maru, a ship detailed to provide security to the rest of the whaling fleet.
All six crew members have been rescued.

The Ady Gil WAS one of the ships
One down and only two to go.
good. Play with fire, you get burned.
“All six crew members have been rescued.”
Looks like the ecoterrorists are well funded.
Pray for America’s Freedom
I hope Discovery Channel got some good footage of the entire event including any conspiracy to place it in harm's way. But this will be a blow for the Japanese; the EarthRacer boat was extremely popular in Australia, and it's sinking will rally a new round of donations to the Sea Shepperd pirates.
That big ship chased it down and rammed it, huh? More like the little one was harrassing them i bet, cutting too close in front, or trying to force the Japanese to change course. They are no better than somali pirates. Love it when libs get real consequences for their theater.
They’re doing their cause no good either.
Most Australians probably don’t like the Japanese whalers. I’m one of them. But the Japanese aren’t breaking the law and so what I like and dislike is irrelevant - they have the right to do what they are doing.
What Sea Shepherd and similar groups try to do does break laws, and while I might agree with their goal, their methods means I can’t support them.
Captain Paul Watson and his bumbling crew continues to be owned by the Japanese Whalers.
Say hello to the Rainbow Warrior down there.
I hope they sink every one of them !!!!!
All six crew members have been rescued.
They should have left them for the sharks!
The way the Ady Gil looks, I’d expect Otter to jump out of it and punch Greg Marmalard.
I don’t approve of whaling, but had to laugh at this. It reminds me of the eco-whackos who were sailing their solar-wind-muscle powered boat up to the artic when the whole thing broke down, and they had to be rescued by an OIL TANKER. God has such a great sense of humor.
It is pleasing that such a cute, rather gay boat got scuttled.
Don't bring a skiff to a whaler fight, sweeties.
The Ady Gil (previously named Earth Race)had just set a speed record for circumnavigation. What a freaking waste.
It may make good eco-theater, but I refuse to watch the shows on Tv after having sat through one.
The anti-whalers seem unhinged to me. If they have a grievance, the place to air it is over whaling in an international forum, not through the terroristic disruption of legal activities which endangers all who are involved.
Sea Shepherd couldn’t keep that hotrod out of the way of a plodding whaling ship? Is there no end to their incompetence?
‘All six crew members have been rescued.’
Playing “chicken” in open seas is a bitch when you’re the smaller vessel.
You beat me to it.
I guarantee you any footage will be mercilessly edited to show it was the whaler's fault.
This is good.
Here is an article from last month.
Note this comment:
“Despite the beefed-up security, Watson said he was confident of disrupting the hunt for a sixth year, saying the activists had a futuristic powerboat which would be able to outrun the ships and block their harpoons. “It’ll be our interceptor vessel, I think it will make a big difference,” he said.”
Looks like the Japanese were ready for their futuristic powerboat. And note freepers had fully predicted this outcome.
Good! Keep the eco-nutters wasting their money.
Ady Gil = Gay Dil
The guy running Sea Shepherd, Paul Watson, is a certifiable lunatic. Greenpeace threw him out of their organization in the 1970’s for being too extreme (think about that). Here’s a brief history of some of the crap Sea Shepherd has pulled:
Note the attacks on non-whaling fishing vessels and the use of MINES to sink one whaler. This guy is the Unabomber on a boat, folks.
I have no love for whalers, but the video at the link seems to show the protest boat speeding up along the port side of the Japanese ship and then attempting to cut across its bow.
Apparently, the helmsman of the protest boat tried to cut it too fine in order to make the Japanese change course, and didn’t judge the numbers right — or was hoping to get hit.
The idea that the Japanese intentionally rammed the boat is as ludicrous as the Chinese claim that the P-3 rammed their fighter.
Don't bring a bullhorn to a harpoon gun fight. Hahahaha
The Japanese stayed on course, and the Ady Gil deliberately crossed their T at point blank range.
The crew of the Ady Gil carried out this insane act of aggression in a lethally unforgiving part of the Ocean. They should be tried and hung as pirates.
I agree, I caught it on the news this morning and started cracking up when I saw what they did. There is no question that they intentionally sank their own boat, they ran it right into the front of the whaler, completely intentional. They tried to use the excuse that the engine died, but they sure got it in reverse and backed away the instant it took the very tip of their bow off.
My wife won't let me watch their show on TV anymore, she is tired of me yelling "SINK THEM, just turn AND SINK THEM!" and waking the kids up...
I absolutely despise the “save the whales” crowd. These people are terrorists/pirates, shoot them and throw them overboard to the sharks!
Guess you'd start with this guy? President Ronald Reagan
In 1976, the quota for Southern Hemisphere Bryde's whales was set to zero by the IWC. However, Japan proceded to take 225 of them during the 76-77 season by issuing itself a permit to take whales for scientific research under Article VIII of the ICRW. Following this event, the IWC recommended all future applications of Article VIII be reviewed by the IWC scientific committee.
In 1986, Japan introduced a similar proposal and later issued itself a scientific permit to take 825 minke whales and 50 sperm whales every year for ten years. Despite the fact that the IWC scientific committee rejected its research proposals Japan continued whaling.
The IWC adopted a resolution in 1987 recommending Japan not proceed until disagreements over its research proposals were resolved. A second resolution was also adopted on February 14, 1988 recommending Japan not proceed. On February 9, 1988 Japanese whalers killed the first minke whale in Antarctic waters under the new "self issued research whaling" permit.
President Ronald Reagan responded by cutting off Japanese fishing privileges in U.S. waters on April 6, 1988 under the Packwood-Magnuson Amendment.
President Ronald Reagan: "Given the lack of any evidence that Japan is bringing its whaling activities into conformance with the recommendations of the IWC, I am directing the Secretary of State under the Packwood-Magnuson Amendment to withhold 100 percent of the fishing privileges that would otherwise be available to Japan in the U.S. Exclusive Economic Zone. Japan has requested the opportunity to fish for 3,000 metric tons of sea snails and 5,000 metric tons of Pacific whiting. These requests will be denied. In addition, Japan will be barred from any future allocations of fishing privileges for any other species, including Pacific cod, until the Secretary of Commerce determines that the situation has been corrected." - U.S. President Ronald Reagan, 1988
Thank you for posting a picture. I think that the whales are conscious creatures and it sickens me to see them hunted like this.
Might give you a good laugh today.
Meat doesn’t come from styrofoam packages ..
Bad analogy. I didn’t say they were human. I said they were conscious. They are, and they know they are. That distinction makes a great deal of difference. It would be like Aliens hunting us. Our consciousness is different than theirs (if they exist) but no less valid or real. We make a grave error in our arrogance, in assuming that because they do not think or live like we do, that they are somehow less.
Piracy and ocean combat come in many forms. The “protesters” were acting as enemy agents.
Don’t go on the open seas and pick a fight and then come crying for mommy.
So is this “poaching” legal because it happened in open water? Certainly they have to traffic the animal somewhere that would fall under the same regulations against killing the animal.
“Meat doesnt come from styrofoam packages” Nor do we still ride in buggys. Massive subsidies - CHECK ‘Cornhusker Kickback’ and “Louisiana Purchase type” deals by Japanese whaling fleet/owners - CHECK And MUCH more. Here’s a very meaty book on the subject. http://books.google.com/books?id=hJPRiQFhCFIC&printsec=frontcover&source=gbs_v2_summary_r&cad=0#v=onepage&q=&f=false
How much longer before the ecoterrorists stage a suicide bombing run at one of the whalers (like the attack on the USS Cole)?
And there are ecoterrorists who do engage in bombings and arson and violent acts of sabotage.
