Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) notified his Twitter users Tuesday that he crossed the 1.7 million follower threshold.
McCain took to Twitter a day after the account of his 2008 presidential election opponent, President Barack Obama, announced it had crossed over the 3 million follower mark:
Over 1.7 million followers!! Thanks everyone - keep tweeting!
The former GOP nominee has a long way to go if he wants to avenge his loss last year by gaining more followers than Obama.
McCain is the second-most followed sitting politician on Twitter and the 49th most followed Twitter user overall according to TwitterCounter, a widely used Twitter metrics site.

Unfortunately for Juan, almost all of them are liberal Democrats.
A sign that McCain should run again for President!!!
/bitter, bitter sarcasm
Oh boy....He’s popular....Lets run him for President!
McCain has voted the right way in 2009 — against the stimulus and health care bills for example. We have much bigger fish to fry than McCain. It’s popular here to call McCain a RINO, but it’s stupid to pretend there is no difference between him and Obama.
He can double those numbers in a day if he pulls a Dodd and retires.
Please John, please retire.
A monkey on a string w/o a cup.
1.7 Million idiots (at least)
The are waiting for him to announce his retirement.
And illegal aliens.
We need JD Hayworth to run against him. Please JD! Run!!!
May they all suffer from TROLLathsma, and forget to vote.
Smoke and Mirrors...NEVER...EVER...Trust a RINO
And that's just the people who want to laugh at him on a daily basis.
More will follow.
Any candidate with “FOLLOWERS” should be shunned.
Remember the old cartoons when somebody got conked over the head with a sledge hammer, and they heard the sounds of tweeting?
Hey, mclame — I got yer tweety-tweet-tweet right here (raises sledge hammer over the “count de monet”, ancien regimer’s head)...
Is this more or less than his big-Twitted daughter has? She’s supposed to be the darling of the Twitterati isn’t she?
1.7 million shallow minded individuals
The false choice is the favorite rhetorical device of both McCain and Obama .
