U.S. overhauls oil, natural gas drilling policy (more insanity)

nterior Secretary Ken Salazar said on Wednesday that big oil and natural gas companies will no longer be "the kings of the world" like they were under the Bush administration, announcing new drilling policies to protect the environment on western federal lands.

While the reforms would likely slow the permitting process to search for oil and gas on government lands and decrease the number of acres available for energy exploration, Salazar rejected industry claims that the Obama administration's policy change would reduce domestic energy supplies.

"The difference is in the prior administration the oil and gas industry essentially were the kings of the world," Salazar said in telephone briefing with reporters. "Whatever they wanted to happen essentially happened and the department essentially was the handmaiden of the oil and gas industry."

Under the reforms, the department's Bureau of Land Management, which oversees onshore drilling activities, would take a more active role in deciding which parcels of federal lands should be leased instead of relying on energy companies to nominate the areas they want to explore.

Salazar charged that in the past, the public lands were a "candy store" for the oil and gas industry, where they could "walk in and take whatever they wanted."

Still, the oil and gas industry slammed the new policy.

"In what has become increasingly familiar double-talk from this administration, Interior Secretary Salazar today again spoke of the importance of domestic oil and natural gas, while making it more difficult to produce American oil and gas, put more Americans back to work and help restore our nation's economy," said Jack Gerard, president of the American Petroleum Institute.

Yeah, Salazar—makes a lot more sense to just send more petrodollars to the ragheads that want to kill us.

Great energy policy.

I do not think this is an issue now as drilling in those areas is much more expensive than drilling in Texas, Louisiana and Oklahoma, but it will be a problem when oil reaches $120.00.

But, $120.00 will be great for an oil industry that has been kicked around.

This would be funny if it was not true.

They already dictate how to build cars and make loans. They want to tell your doctor how to practice medicine and now they want to tell energy companies how to explore for oil. How do people NOT see the stupidity in all of this?

Let’s live like Norway, oh but not the offshore drilling part, we will just lease our oil fields out to China instead that will be a bang up job for the environment.....

It’s my understanding that it takes 3-5 years just to get the permits to drill today. They want to lengthen the process? To who’s benefit? The Saudi’s?

Ken Salazar should label this left wing nut job policy as the “American Energy Suicide” policy. What we really need is gas prices to skyrocket in the face of inflation and high unemployment. In other words, it’s the Jimmy Carter redux. Then, all you need is a Republican conservative leader with some cojones to run for office in 2012. In the mean time, let’s hope that the Congress can be totally reshaped this November and rid our hallowed Capitol of Pelosi and Reid.

It seems like a policy to make us dependent upon Arab oil more and more rather than less and less.

The policies of the left are in no way intended, in sum, to support 300 million people...they must be thinking of maybe 50 million at best, to be supported by equivalent future energy, infrastructure, food and water, services, healthcare fespecially included, etc. Also, with China controlling 97% of the 17 rare earth elements, many necessary for the ‘green’ revolution technology, the US will not be a leader in any green ‘revolution’ production....China will.

Ken Salazar, your slowing of the permiting process is keeping me out of work. May I have a discussion with you in a cage? Two in only one leaves. Got it?

Just imagine how different our ME policy would be if we didn’t need their oil.

For one we could tell Saudi Arabia, the major financier of all things jihad, to eat sand.

Saladhead doesn't know what it's like to take huge risks for nominal profit.

As it is, the majors are going to extreme depths in the hopes they'll hit a pocket of oil, or squeezing natural gas from pockets of shale rock (XOM is buying XTO expressly for that purpose, but had a clause put in the contract that it the regulators make the project unprofitable, they can nix the deal, leaving shareholders of both companies biting their nails until May).

They have to deal with extreme, punitive fines for small spills, terrorists constantly attacking pipelines in Nigeria, corrupt judges in Ecuador, Russian oil company randomly mentioning it would like to purchase the assets of it's US partner, (Lukoil/COP) or the permits in the US that are bid, won, paid for, partially developed, and cancelled, etc, etc, etc, etc.

In typical Obamanation SOP, US companies and their shareholders are demonized - I just knew "Strangling Oil Investors" would be floating up to the top of "Who To Eff Off Today" list when I saw the EPA's preemptive strike on Air Users just before the Carbon Toons.

Things like this make me all the more certain Obama and his administration have a dictatorship in the works. Not even dear leader’s dumb enough to think people will still follow this insanity willingly when they can’t afford to even eat.

The November elections will tell.
