National Security Adviser Says Airline Bomber Report Will 'Shock' Americans (Ineptitude Alert!)
Foxnews ^ | 1/7/2010 | Staff

Posted on 01/07/2010 3:47:01 AM PST by Red in Blue PA

Americans will feel "a certain shock" when a report is released today detailing the intelligence failures that could have prevented the alleged Christmas Day airline bomber from ever boarding the plane.

In an interview published Thursday in USA Today, White House national security adviser James Jones said President Obama "is legitimately and correctly alarmed that things that were available, bits of information that were available, patterns of behavior that were available, were not acted on."

"That's two strikes," he was quoted as saying, referring to the failed Northwest jet attack and the shooting massacre at Fort Hood, Texas, in November. The Army base attack left 13 dead after officials failed to act on intelligence identifying suspected gunman Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan as a threat to fellow soldiers.

Jones, a retired four-star Marine general, told the paper that Obama "certainly doesn't want that third strike, and neither does anybody else."

Elaborating, Jones said, "The man on the street ... will be surprised that these correlations weren't made" between clues pointing toward a threat from Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab. Even though the 23-year-old Nigerian man was in a database of possible terrorists, he managed to fly from Nigeria through Amsterdam to Detroit with an explosive concealed on his body.

I can’t help remember back when the DHS was touted as the solution to these bits of information not being tied together. We have the DHS now, yet the WH insists that not one single person or agency is to blame.

Aside from that, it is always a waste of time to fix the blame and ignore the problem. Bottom line, any one boarding an aircraft with the know how could blow it out of the sky. Explosives are made of plastic, we scan for metal. You could fill a laptop or briefcase with plastic explosive and walk right on a plane.

I’m more worried about targets other than airplanes....trains, buses, waterways. We always seem to narrow our focus on the most recent attack and method after the fact, ignoring others. The airport waiting lines would provide a much bigger target than a single jet. I have very little confidence right now...stay vigilant.

What Shock... the only way this report will shock me is if .. FUHRER OBAMA takes TOTAL BLAME for the mishap.

But, Dear Fuhrer, No matter What POLICY may be... when a new MANAGER takes over the Department, the Entire department with Quickly learn what the new manager WANTS... and GIVE it to him...
Since you’ve taken office, you’ve given the entire country exactly what you want re: Terrorism..and that is... NOTHING.. Now you are going to have to PAY for that STUPIDITY!

I suspect that the reasons the information and patterns of behavior were not acted upon in 911 and these cases, are similar. Officials do not want to risk being sued and punished and accused of racism, profiling, and bad judgment. There is little reward for action that satisfies the primary mission as long as what used to be minor organizational missions are now equal to or more important than the primary mission.

People will almost always be accused of doing something wrong if they blow the whistle, the event does not occur, but the lawyers, ACLU, CAIR will jump on them with both feet, IMO.

My guess is that the lawyers for the Ft. Hood terrorist and the Detroit flight are already working overtime to accuse guilt ridden Democrats of causing terrorists to act, and blaming previous administration policies. What a world!

Our policies are laced with lack of common sense thanks to "political correctness" being enforced by the ACLU, EEO, Diversity commissions, feminism, trial lawyers, organizational quotas, and so on, all armed with paperwork and high level government appointees ready to act.

I actually don't blame Obama or anyone that Ramalamadingdong was able to do what he did. This isn't "Enemy of the State", the security agencies aren't that good, and a single actor who isn't afraid to die can almost always get through, given enough tries.

What I DO blame Obama, and Bush, for is my 86-year old USN veteran retired physician father standing half naked in an airport, being shoved around by goons and humiliated by almost falling, in full view of the public, because he can't keep his cane and his defibrillator/pacemaker can't go through the metal screener.

Stealing an old and accomplished patriot's pride is a disgrace. THAT is an inexcusable failure, repeated, I'm sure, thousands of times a day.

And THAT I do not forgive.

As Harry Truman once said so aptly, “The Buck Stops Here!!!”. If any American with half a brain thinks that POTUS Barack Obama is protecting America and Americans then they are smoking funny stuff or drinking far too mauch Kool Aid. Thbe real culprits here, starting at the top, are POTUS Barack Hussein Obama (the America destroyer), Janet Napolitano (The clueless of the clueless) and John Brennen (As dumb as one can be)!!! All of these three folks should be immediately fired by the American people with the Democrat Party taking the lead by insisting on their resignations, and less that action, impeaching them. The enemies of America are now supercharged and enegized to the maximum, so I pray for America and Americans every single moment of the day. Unfortunately American voters have put themselves in a position where under the leadership of POTUS Barack Hussein Obama, we are all in harm’s way every single day he remains in office!!!

That's the real bottom line. H$ll, Major Hasan was even on the Obama Transistion Team (albeit in a minor role).

When the boss prohibits the aggressive profiling of muslims and discourages the robust identification, investigation, and prosecution of terrorists, the system will either naturally operate in a suboptimal manner OR NOT OPERATE AT ALL.

This is all Obama's fault!

everything that is carried onto plane goes through the boarding x-ray machine on the belt. That could incorporate a sniffer to detect any problem substances such as drugs, explosives, etc.

WH National Security Adviser James Jones: “...he managed to fly from Nigeria through Amsterdam to Detroit with an explosive concealed on his body.”

Maybe, maybe not. Jones may well have solid info that has not been publicly disclosed, but so far, we only know that Mutallab had explosives on his person at the time the plane descended to Detroit.

Prior to that descent, Mutallab spent a lot of time in the bathroom. Based on what we’ve seen in apparent dry runs over the years—of which we probably know of only a portion—with their focus on holing up in lavatories, I am not so sure that Mutallab’s package started out in Nigeria ready-to-go. In fact, it seems an unnecessary risk to put all the marbles on this one man getting onto three different planes with the payload.

Presumably, the plotters would not have been certain that Mutallab would sail through three boardings and that intel was not connecting the dots. I’m inclined to think they divvied up the components among several couriers for later assembly using a combination of passengers or airline employees that would not have triggered scrutiny in the way Mutallab might be expected to.

“”””We know what happened, we know what didn’t happen, and we know how to fix it,” Jones, a retired four-star Marine general, said in an interview in his West Wing office. “That should be an encouraging aspect. We don’t have to reinvent anything to make sure it doesn’t happen again.””””””

Contrary to the garbage being spewed by Obama and his political advisors, General Jones very clearly stated that the system Obama inherited from Bush/Cheney works just fine. Gen. Jones clearly states the problem is Obama and his crew of flunkies.

“Fund their own security”? And how is that going to affect their bottom line? Companies that want to cut costs and ticket prices by skimping on expensive security searches would pose a threat to all of us.

Moreover, who cleans up the mess if their security precautions fail? If a plane blows up upon landing at an airport, it won’t be the airline that has to pay for the cleanup - it will be the taxpayer. Same with a plane flown into a building ... would American Airlines have been able to assume all the costs of the WTC attack? They would just have reorganized under bankruptcy laws and walked away from the mess.

It would be very intriguing, though, to see how successful an airline which boasted “No onerous s3wecurity lines and searches!” did in attracting customers.

“Fund their own security”? And how is that going to affect their bottom line?

Oh, I see, you want SOCIALIZED airline security.

Somebody pays for the existing system, in this case it's taxpayers. People used to call such things "subsidies" but I guess when it comes to government providing security for a private business that is losing money we all have to chip in.

Companies that want to cut costs and ticket prices by skimping on expensive security searches would pose a threat to all of us.

As to whether they would chisel, it's up to their insurers to decide whether cheesy cockpit doors are a bad idea. But since we had the FAA said they're just fine, you bought that risk and we paid $12 BILLION to the airlines when the FAA system inevitably failed and billions more for a hapless and incompetent agency buying boondoggle equipment that teaches the public to accept an outrageous invasion of privacy. The public didn't howl when they disarmed pilots either.

How well did that work?

Frankly, if air travel is that risky then people will select other modes that don't have such a high cost of risk ONLY if the cost is in the ticket. Internet meetings or taxi services would be a better risk and those industries would develop instead. They have their risks too, such as EMP or blowing up bridges. If they had to fund it via insurance, then the insurers would compete to invest in businesses that lower the cost of the risk. It would be profitable.

This is how markets work to solve real problems. When we go to coercive political solutions we get systems that fail at outrageous cost to both economy, liberty, and security.

Add my disabled son to your list of the thousands.

The only result of continuing to subject every passenger to this charade will be the demise of air travel and tourism in this and most other countries.

The solution is to let airlines handle security and let the public select with who they fly based on the safety record.

Personally I would fly with the airline that came up with a reasonable profile of a terrorist and applied appropriate security to this type.

To: worst-case scenario

Most of your post is supportive of the current situation which we all can see will fail over and over again.

The question of who pays for a failure is a good one. But you imply that bankruptcy and reorganization are not any big deal for a company. You are wrong there, as entire careers go down the drain when this happens and decent management will regard this as something to be avoided. Admittedly the new management of the reorganized company will be delighted with their chance at the helm, but the old management will be in the gutter.

Now, when there is a failure of the government system, does anyone care? (Sure they will say they care, but is there any penalty to make them sorry for their errors in judgement? Not likely. We will see in this case.)

The bottom line is that the public will decide who to support and who to savage in this. The airline that boasts the best security will carry the most passengers and the airline that promotes the poorest security will go out of business taking their bad management with them.

Your comment about flying with “no onerous searches” was valid, but the airlines would actually compete by claiming how good and selective their security was, IF Political Correctness directives were abolished.

I concur. TSA made my wife send my 6 year old through the scanner first, he ran and they would not let my wife go get him as he ran away in the terminal. She insisted that she go first but the lackies would have none of it. I should not be shocked as it is a pattern,

But damn, one would think
—a terrorist attack over Detroit AND
—the murder of 7 CIA agents by al Queda AND
—Obama’s stooge proclaiming ‘The system worked’

might, just might have given him reason to ask Michelle “Think I need to get back to DC?”
