TSA agent leaves post at Newark Airport (Video just released)
Office of Sen. Frank Lautenberg ^ | Jan. 7, 2020 | Office of Sen. Frank Lautenberg

NEWARK, NJ - After calling for the release of surveillance footage of the January 3 security breach at Newark Liberty Airport in meetings with top security officials at the Transportation Security Administration, the Port Authority and Continental Airlines, Sen. Frank R. Lautenberg (D-NJ) today released video footage of the security breach. The video, approved for release by the TSA, is not considered Sensitive Security Information and law enforcement officials have determined that it will be useful in helping to advance the ongoing investigation.

“The release of this video will give law enforcement another tool to help find the person who breached the security gate at Newark Liberty Airport,” stated Lautenberg. “I encourage this individual or anyone with knowledge of his identity to immediately contact law enforcement.”

“It is unacceptable that the Port Authority took so long to produce this tape, but now that it is public we have a better chance of getting to the bottom of this major security incident.”

The video can be viewed or downloaded here.

Key moments in the video:

•1:01: TSA officer asks unidentified man to move away from secure area •4:54: TSA officer leaves his post •5:31: unidentified man enters secure area

I asked that very question at Reagan National once and was told that they are not installed there because they would impede people’s ability to get out if ever a “rapid emergency mass evacuation” were necessary. Being a fairly frequent user of that airport, I didn’t even want to think about the implications of that one.

...or just some turnstiles that would set off an alarm if someone tried to enter the secure area that way.

Security, what security? Several dozen terrorists could have walked through that GAPING HOLE of a security screen.

What a pathetic bureaucracy! And they want these same folks to control your health care and medical needs. Absolute INSANITY!

...they would impede people’s ability to get out if ever a “rapid emergency mass evacuation” were necessary.

So in an emergency they wouldn't have everyone evacuate through the larger entrance section? They'd make everyone cram through the small exit corridor off to the side?

Isn't that the most idiotic excuse you've ever heard? That's what fire exits should be for.

Because they would mean fewer government jobs.

Because the mfg of these is not considered green technology. Therefore no money is allocated to it.

It looked to me like it was a couple who "breached the gate" (also known as "walked down a hall" since there was no gate or guard there.)

Was she coming off a plane?

DFW airport has turnstiles that prevent reentry. They are like big revolving doors.

I just trudge through the place now and don’t ask questions. Much about the airport experience these days is idiotic. I can’t say I have ever noticed any fire exits there. And I don’t think fires are what they are concerned about, either. All the bathrooms have signs that say, “shelter in place,” another thing I don’t want to think about: being trapped in a bathroom at Reagan when the big one comes.

I have an idea:

How about installing extremely bright spotlights that are aimed outward, away from the concourse exit. That way, anyone attempting to enter the wrong way would be blinded, and would also be illuminated so brightly that even a half-asleep TSA agent might have a chance of spotting them. An additional benefit would be that anyone approaching with dark sunglasses or sporting a welder's mask could immediately be presumed to be a potential terrorist, marking them for additional scrutiny.

Of course, there's always Plan B: Sharks with frickin' laser beams on their heads. Either one works for me.

...............impede people’s ability to get out if ever a “rapid emergency mass evacuation” were necessary.
***************************************************
That makes no sense ,, you just have a regular (wide) doorway next to the turnstile that is alarmed if you need to evacuate..

I am not defending it, I thought it was pretty dumb, too. But that is WHAT THE PEOPLE WHO RUN OUR AIRPORT SAY, and apparently how they think. Scary, isn’t it?
