KARACHI (AFP) – Eight suspected insurgents were killed Friday when explosives intended for a bomb attack accidentally blew up, destroying a militant safe house in Pakistan's financial capital Karachi, police said.
Guns, grenades and suicide vests were recovered from the house in a poor Karachi neighbourhood, which officials said was a den for Islamist insurgents involved in the escalating campaign of violence in the nuclear-armed nation.
Karachi police chief Waseem Ahmad said that early intelligence suggested the militant cell had been planning to attack a court in the city, possibly when Interior Minister Rehman Malik was due to appear.
In other incidents in Pakistan's northwest, five militants were killed in Khyber district by a suicide bomber from a rival Islamist militia, two people died in a bombing in Bajaur, and a US missile strike killed five insurgents.
Militant attacks have intensified as Pakistan's armed forces, with vocal support from Washington, push into northwestern Taliban strongholds.
Fayyaz Khan, a senior police official in the southern port city of Karachi, said eight bodies had been pulled from the rubble of the flattened house.
"So far, evidence on the ground shows the occupants of this house were trying to shift explosives and weapons when the blast occurred," he said.
Ahmad told reporters that 25 hand grenades, three Kalashnikov rifles, ammunition and two suicide jackets were recovered from the rubble.

SNIPPET: “New Delhi The ISI has put together a team of Indian jihadis in Karachi, and is waiting to launch them into the country on a terrorist project, alleged terror suspects David Coleman Headley and Mohammad Amjad Khwaja have told their interrogators.
Headley was arrested by the FBI in Chicago in October last year, and is accused of recceing Mumbai and other Indian cities for the Lashkar-e-Toiba as part of the preparations for 26/11. Khwaja, belonging to the Harkat-ul Jihad-i Islami, was arrested on January 18, and is being held in Hyderabad.
Headley has described the “Karachi project” to FBI interrogators, details of which have been shared with New Delhi, sources said. He is believed to have said that both the ISI and the Lashkar have been training Indian nationals in terrorist activities, and using them for anti-India.”
