The unruly and allegedly drunk passenger who forced an emergency landing of an AirTran jet flying from Atlanta to San Francisco Friday is being held over the weekend in anticipation of federal charges being filed Monday.
Muhammad Abu Tahir, 46, of Virginia was transported to the El Paso, Co. County jail where he will be detained on a federal hold, said FBI officials.
Federal charges for interference with a flight crew are expected to be filed, FBI spokeswoman Kathleen Wright told the AJC Friday night.
The incident occurred on AirTran flight #39 as the plane neared Colorado Springs, Co. AirTran spokesman Tad Hutcheson told the AJC Friday afternoon. The Boeing 737 was almost four hours into the flight, and had 132 passengers and five crew on board.
The flight departed Atlanta around 9:48 a.m., said Hutcheson. Around 1:30 EST, a flight attendant reported to the captain a man being disruptive.
“He failed to obey instructions to be seated, became verbally and physically abusive towards the flight attendant, and then proceeded to lock himself in the plane’s restroom,” Hutcheson said.

Did anyone ever hear anymore about the two (or three) Brits who were detained after they made comments or threats aboard the flight flying out of Heathrow tonight? I just saw a couple reports on Fox, and it was the same sort of thing, drunk, unruly passengers making threats. But they didn’t identify the ethnicity of the men, nor did they mention what the threats were.
I thought drinking was againt Islam. Murder is okay but not martinis.
Kathy Wright, spokeswoman for the FBI in Denver, said the FBI has asked the Colorado Springs police to continue to detain the passenger.
Wright said that prior to the plane’s departure from Colorado Springs, FBI agents interviewed the AirTran flight crew and passengers. Also interviewed were the police who took the passenger off the plane, she said.
Wright said the agents are investigating allegations that the disruptive passenger grabbed a flight attendant and that he also removed his shoes during the incident.
Wright said the FBI will confer with the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Denver. If charges are filed, the FBI will release the name, age and hometown of the passenger.

Do Muslims ever just get in the car with the wife and kids, and DRIVE? This is more than just a drunk passenger, maybe even “just” itching for money from a civil rights lawsuit, which aids terror (by weakening us in our reactions). The system will be overwhelmed and something will happen, even if these disturbances aren’t all “terrorism.” It is NOT a good time to be an “unruly” passenger, especially when Muslim. It almost seems like the crazy floodgates have been opened.
This is only to be expected. Obama is weak and the world knows it. The Muslims see him as sympthetic to their cause and Chavez sees him as a useful idiot. As a foot note the next time I hear a Republican call him a nice guy but misguided I will lose all respect for that particular Republican.

The insidious cruelty of these people is something that is hard to fathom. Harmless citizens going about their business of getting from A to B, then being not only inconvenienced but no doubt scared as well.
Something has to happen pretty soon. We cannot keep on trying to get back on even keel. First a ban on air travel for life should come into effect. Next force such an individual to pay reparations.
What needs to happen is all passengers can take on spray-can bull horns and keep yer trigger finger on it.
