What’s causing the cold weather?
MET Office ^ | 1/6/2010 | Staff

6 January 2009 (MET Office date error)

In most winters, and certainly those in the last 20 years or so, our winds normally come from the south-west. This means air travels over the relatively warm Atlantic and we get mild conditions in the UK. However, over the past three weeks the Atlantic air has been ‘blocked’ and cold air has been flowing down from the Arctic or the cold winter landmass of Europe.

Why the cold weather?

The low temperatures in the UK have also been accompanied by snow. This is because areas of low pressure have been running in from the north-east, tracking across the North Sea and picking up moisture along the way, which falls as snow.

However, it is not cold everywhere in the world. North-east America, Canada, North Africa, the Mediterranean, and south-west Asia have all seen temperatures above normal – in many places by more than 5 °C, and in parts of northern Canada, by more than 10 °C.

LST anomalies WRT 1961-90Fig 1. The map shows that while it has been cold in Northern Europe, other parts of the world have seen above average temperatures.

Is it colder than average?

The mean UK temperature for December was 2.1 °C, making it the coldest for 14 years and colder than the long-term average for December of 4.2 °C. However, December was one of only two months in 2009 which had a below-average mean temperature.

What does this say about climate change?

Climate change is taking place as the earth continues to warm up.

In the UK, 2009 as a whole was the 14th-warmest on record (since 1914). This above-average temperature trend was reflected globally, with 2009 being the fifth-warmest year on the global record (since 1850).

The current cold weather in the UK is part of the normal regional variations that take place in the winter season. It doesn’t tell us anything about climate change, which has to be looked at in a global context and over longer periods of time.

You ninnies in the UK. The harsh weather is God’s revenge for all your pseudo-scientists trying to place man above God in their weather schemes and in so doing trying to starve innocent people with high taxes and lost jobs.

Go to church, fall on your knees, and ask God’s forgiveness for lying to your neighbors. Spring will follow.

The answer is obvious. This cold snap is more proof of global warming.

It is entirely plausible that the road toward higher world temperatures is paved with the variations of daily and seasonal temperatures. However, it is not plausible that the same road is paved with hundreds of record lowest-low and lowest-high temperatures!

Upon seeing that I wonder how they have managed to factor out “heat islands.” A sensor that was once out by itself in the middle of a wheat field but now is encroached upon by modern buildings does not give us an honest picture over time.

Thanks for pointing out their fallacies in thinking. Would it be possible for something man-made to block the air flow?....like satellite waves of sort?

What a pile of man-pig feces, up here in Northeast New Jersey, we've been freezing our asses off.

Why is it so cold? Owl Gore stole our warmth. It is Gore's fault.

It’s not really cold.

Just hide the decline.

...Northeast New Jersey, we've been freezing ... Exactly, yet New Jersey is not freezing according to the MET Office Map. MET Office oversees the CRU at Climate Gate.

What’s causing the cold weather?

Karl Rove and his weather machine, of course ...

UK MET is staffed by fools or liars or both. US East is warmer then normal? That is a bald face lie, it is and has been damn cold here in east Texas, my water pipes frooze for the first time ever last night and tonight is going to be colder still. Wish the English would do something about the liars at the UK Met and BBC.

I am always amused by the “coldest” “hottest” “climate change” BS. It really tickles me when our local TV weatherman tries to use that and will say this is record breaking cold “climate change”- last time it was this cold was 1953 or some such. If it has been this hot or hotter in the past or this cold or colder how does it prove warming or cooling??? Temperature change is not new.

The earth is a lot older than 1850 or 160 years old! Sheesh!

They have only checked temperatures for 130 years, and until recently, it wasn’t digital and accurate.
