News Analysis: Has Romney Made Progress with Mormon Factor?
Utah Policy ^ | 01/04/2009 | LaVarr Webb

Mitt Romney appears to be positioning himself well for his expected presidential run in 2012.  He hasn’t been too noisy or too quiet. He has avoided major controversy. He’s building support around the country.

The current election year will provide Romney all sorts of opportunities to travel the nation, campaigning for gubernatorial and congressional candidates, raising money for them, giving speeches, and strengthening his national network.

Romney has to be considered the clear front-runner for the 2010 GOP nomination. Being the frontrunner this early, however, may be more of a problem than a benefit. Frontrunners take all the arrows.

Despite all of the positive things going for Romney, he still has one challenge that is befuddling – the Mormon factor.

There’s no question that the Mormon matter was a big issue in the 2008 campaign, exploited by the likes of Mike Huckabee.

Will 2012 be different? Will the Mormon factor dissipate in importance? Is Romney now familiar enough with voters that his religion won’t be an issue?

Only time will tell. But my guess is that the Mormon factor will still be important and a problem for Romney, at least among the religious right.

Sometimes, after an issue has been fully “vetted” with all the news media writing about it, numerous analyses having been published, and lots of discussions about it, it goes away.

But the Mormon issue doesn’t seem to go away, at least among some groups important in the nomination process. Some religious conservatives are convinced Mormonism is a cult and they will never vote for a Mormon for president.

A 2008 book by veteran California pollster Gary C. Lawrence illustrates the problem. Lawrence, a Mormon and pollster for 35 years, did a major national survey for his book, “How Americans View Mormonism.” The research did not produce happy results for Mormons.

Lawrence found Mormonism has a major image problem. Only 37% of Americans view Mormons favorably, while 49% have an unfavorable impression. For every one person who strongly likes Mormons, more than four strongly dislike Mormons.

Some 49% of respondents said Mormons are “mysterious.” Forty-four percent mentioned “weird beliefs,” 43% said women are treated as second-class citizens. Between 38% and 45% variously describe Mormons as blind followers, insular, narrow-minded, self-righteous, fanatical and brainwashed. Lawrence found a great deal of ignorance about Mormons and their beliefs.

So the question is, can Romney, in his second try, win the nomination (and ultimately the presidency) given these factors?

My guess is that Romney has made some progress with this issue. Whether it is enough for him to win is still unknown.

The only religion I’d have a problem with in a candidate is Islam. Governor Romney’s problems stem from his pro-abortion/anti-abortion, anti-gun/pro-gun, big spender/fiscal conservative flip flops and his RomneyCare debacle, not his spiritual beliefs.

You have an intresting "about" page. Thanks for the insight on your relationship with mormons.

ASOC, thank YOU for mentioning that part of delacoert's homepage -- I just read it and agree. Delacoert, I especially like your reflections on your experience dealing with cults. Thank you for writing it and sharing it.

TennCare was a flop, HICare is a flop, Mass is unusall only that it took longer than normal for the ‘system’ to crater.

ANY gov’t mandated health care is and always will be a disaster.

Mitt should keep the discussion to relevant issues. Acknowledge he is a Mormoon but move on.

If he gets trapped in the discussion he will only reinforce the view, which is a fact, that Mormons believe all other religions before LDS are apostasy beliefs, per Joseph Smith.

There will be news articles ad-nauseum describing their beliefs and how they have built a community that is separate from the rest of us.

He will even be asked about the “More Perfect” religion.

Etc, etc, etc.

Just acknowledge and move on.

Forgot to add. They view everyone who is not LDS as “outsiders”.

In fact, they are Mormons and everyone else are Christians.

They are totally and completely seperate, from the Christian faiths.

Mitt is going to be asked about the Holy Trinity and the Mormon trinity is at odds with Christian Trinity.

Mitt is going to be asked if he presumes to one day ascend and become a God, as promised by the Mormon religion.

Mitt will be asked if God is a Jealous God, Thou Shalt have no other God’s before me, etc, etc, etc.

He isn’t going to come up with an answer that doesn’t leave a hole in way too many peoples stomach.

Now then, friends, since some of you say ‘NO WAY”, let me ask THIS: When you step into the booth in Nov. 2010, IF the prezzy choices are Romney and Odumbo, who gets your vote? Some write-in? Some third party candidate? You gonna stay home and grumble? ANY of those three choices are very likely to put the questionably-eligible, halfbreed, socialist, lying, criminal-appointing, incompetant in our WH for another four years. WE MUST NOT DO THAT. Whomever is on your GOP ticket—vote for him/her. We have GOT to eliminate the RAT threat to our nation, so vote UNITED—and sort out the RINOS later if necessary! —D2BAH

If Obama is on the Ballot and Romney is the other choice, I will do what I almost did until Palin was on her old man’s ticket. I won’t vote and let the cards fall where they may.

The lesser of two evils thing is old. Get me a real conservative.
