News Analysis: Has Romney Made Progress with Mormon Factor?
Utah Policy ^ | 01/04/2009 | LaVarr Webb

Mitt Romney appears to be positioning himself well for his expected presidential run in 2012.  He hasn’t been too noisy or too quiet. He has avoided major controversy. He’s building support around the country.

The current election year will provide Romney all sorts of opportunities to travel the nation, campaigning for gubernatorial and congressional candidates, raising money for them, giving speeches, and strengthening his national network.

Romney has to be considered the clear front-runner for the 2010 GOP nomination. Being the frontrunner this early, however, may be more of a problem than a benefit. Frontrunners take all the arrows.

Despite all of the positive things going for Romney, he still has one challenge that is befuddling – the Mormon factor.

There’s no question that the Mormon matter was a big issue in the 2008 campaign, exploited by the likes of Mike Huckabee.

Will 2012 be different? Will the Mormon factor dissipate in importance? Is Romney now familiar enough with voters that his religion won’t be an issue?

Only time will tell. But my guess is that the Mormon factor will still be important and a problem for Romney, at least among the religious right.

Sometimes, after an issue has been fully “vetted” with all the news media writing about it, numerous analyses having been published, and lots of discussions about it, it goes away.

But the Mormon issue doesn’t seem to go away, at least among some groups important in the nomination process. Some religious conservatives are convinced Mormonism is a cult and they will never vote for a Mormon for president.

A 2008 book by veteran California pollster Gary C. Lawrence illustrates the problem. Lawrence, a Mormon and pollster for 35 years, did a major national survey for his book, “How Americans View Mormonism.” The research did not produce happy results for Mormons.

Lawrence found Mormonism has a major image problem. Only 37% of Americans view Mormons favorably, while 49% have an unfavorable impression. For every one person who strongly likes Mormons, more than four strongly dislike Mormons.

Some 49% of respondents said Mormons are “mysterious.” Forty-four percent mentioned “weird beliefs,” 43% said women are treated as second-class citizens. Between 38% and 45% variously describe Mormons as blind followers, insular, narrow-minded, self-righteous, fanatical and brainwashed. Lawrence found a great deal of ignorance about Mormons and their beliefs.

So the question is, can Romney, in his second try, win the nomination (and ultimately the presidency) given these factors?

My guess is that Romney has made some progress with this issue. Whether it is enough for him to win is still unknown.

Well, whatever. I think Romney's biggest problem is the crowd of "Mit-bots" who surround him.

They may well believe they are helping their boy by attacking the competition over the slightest thing, but all they do is call attention to the fact that he has a crowd of whiners surrounding him.

Best if Mit fires the Mit-bots now while he still has a chance.

Now, is Romney a Mormon? By crackies, had no idea. He belongs to that place in Vermillion, right? Used to drive over from Detroit city!

If Romney gets the nomination, the media will make a big deal about Mormons not allowing blacks to be elders until the 1970s. Also if any news about a LDS cult leader marrying teenage girls makes news, the media will tie the cult leader to Romney.

I don’t care if he’s a Mormon or a Martian. McRomney is an other RINO that needs to be shown the exit door.

"Mormon factor," my ass.

Hey, Lavar -- it's the bigger, more intrusive government as the solution to every problem factor.

Get a clue.

Mitt lost me permanently when he signed the Mass. health care bill.

For all his smarts and training in running businesses, he stabbed Mass business in the back.

I firmly believe that if that Mass bill had gone down in flames, we wouldn’t be beseiged by the current crop in Congress trying to ram anything down our throats about “health care”.

Reid & Pelosi will never care if they break the backs of small business.

I don’t care what his religion is. He’s a blow-dried toothy RINO of the first water, virtually to the point of being an overt Dem, and I wouldn’t vote for him no matter what.

But he has more money than anybody else, and I betcha he’s going to buy the candidacy. Mark my words.

Being a Mormon is no problem.

It's the RINO factor and the fact that he is old-style Rockefeller Republican elitist.

This guy is a loser's loser.

That would make him a loser squared: LOSER2.

I daresay you're correct. And it's so ironic, given that anti-Palin folks, who are so often pro-Romney folks, often argue that Palin has been "too damaged" by the media to be electable!

From what I have read at this site - posted by Mormons - I would say this problem has grown. Previously I detested him merely for his policy positions, hypocrisy, arrogance and regional bigotry. Now I would add the Mormon business. That White Horse stuff left a big steaming pile of road biscuits for me.

I can think of only two prominent Mormon politicians.

Mitt Romney and Harry Reid.

Not an attractive muster.

His decided lack of firm conservative principles is whats costing him support.

Maybe, but he needs to do a LOT more about the RINO factor.

I think the one in 2012 might be a tad more difficult.

This article is trying to build up a sympathy vote for Romney, after all it’s his turn and it’s only his religion that’s holding him back. See I’m not prejudiced against his religion, I’ll vote for him —NOT! A vote for Romney is for more and more big government. All the Washington types will love him.

Hmmmm... things don't look good for him.

Some say that Reid's popularity has plummeted because people recently found out that he is a Mormon.
