WASHINGTON DC, United States - A top US military commander responsible for the Middle East and the Gulf region said the United States has developed contingency plans to deal with Iran's nuclear facilities, insisting that they "can be bombed."

"Well, they certainly can be bombed," General David Petraeus, head of US Central Command, told CNN television as he commented on suggestions that Iranian nuclear facilities were heavily fortified.

"The level of effect would vary with who it is that carries it out, what ordnance they have, and what capability they can bring to bear," he added.

The network plans to air the interview later Sunday, but has released some excerpts.

Even if they CAN be bombed, they won’t. Not with the Muslim-in-Chief.

Good for General Petraeus, that will keep them thinking. Maybe they will spend themselves into a real disaster trying to protect there plants.

I did a recent plot using open source. I used Google Earth and saved them into a kmz file. Anyone who wanting this - send me an e-mail. For some reason my web page won’t allow me to load it as a link - I guess since it is a kmz file...

I’m not sure if the internal issues in Iran could lead to a change in government which would in turn lead to a scrapping of the fuel cycle facilities. Either way Obozo doesn’t seem to have a clue.

Do you think Obama should adopt the Cheney-Bush-NeoCon strategy on Iran?

Call them Axis of Evil?

Or should he invent some new and catchy slogan?

It seems to me the leaders of Iran have so much to deal with right now that any additional problems thrown their way would effectively delay their nuclear program. They are like a juggler with five or six things in play at once. You don’t have to physically attack the guy to bring his act to an end. Just a momentary distraction is all it takes.

We don’t impose any price whatsoever on them for their mischief. The sanctions are a laugh. They aren’t that big a deal to start with, and anyone who wants to just ignores them with impunity.

Until they start encountering some truly hard choices about just how important their nuclear program is to them, and what they are willing to do without in order to support it, they will simply continue to ‘negotiate’ and go right on with development.

One thing that could unite the Persian people behind the regime is an outside attack.

Petreaus' remarks are not offhand, he is clearly the conduit for sending a message from higher up.

re: One thing that could unite the Persian people behind the regime is an outside attack

True. But the goal of an attack would be to prevent the use of a nuclear device against a US city or Israel. Compared to the outcome of such an attack, the uniting of the people behind the regime responsible for it would be of little consequence.

If there is such an attack on us, or Israel, there is little doubt what the response should be. IMHO, it makes no sense to make an attack on them dependent on them striking first. If they attack, and then we attack, there’s going to be a much higher casualty count than if are attack prevents their attack.

I don't think the iranians will test once they get the bomb.

I think they will smuggle it into Israel and conduct the "test" there, if it works, it takes out a great deal of Israel, but if it fails, it acts as a dirty bomb and many die of radiation poisoning.

What do you guys think?

Interesting plan, but Israel is too small with too much technology on the entry ports (from what I understand, I'm no expert) to get the bomb in there. But if they could pull it off your plan would unfortunately be a logical one.
