US military commander for the Middle East and the Gulf region has confirmed that the United States has developed contingency plans to deal with Iran's nuclear facilities.
Gen David Petraeus, head of Central Command or Centcom, did not elaborate on the plans, but said the military has considered the impacts of any action taken there.
Asked about the vulnerability of Iran's nuclear installations, he told CNN: "Well, they certainly can be bombed. The level of effect would vary with who it is that carries it out, what ordnance they have, and what capability they can bring to bear."

He added: "It would be almost literally irresponsible if Centcom were not to have been thinking about the various 'what ifs' and to make plans for a whole variety of different contingencies."
Iran maintains its nuclear programme is for peaceful purposes, but the United States and other Western nations fear Tehran wants to acquire nuclear weapons.
Israel has called Iran's nuclear programme the major threat facing its nation. Gen Petraeus declined to comment about Israel's military capabilities, according to CNN.
Iran had until the end of last year to accept a deal offered five permanent UN Security Council members – Britain, China, France, Russia and the United States, plus Germany.
It did not do so. Instead, Tehran gave the West until the end of January to accept its own proposal.
Petraeus said he thought there was still time for the nations to engage Iran in diplomacy, noting there is no deadline on the enactment of any US contingency plans.
But he added that "there's a period of time, certainly, before all this might come to a head".

The expression of the CIC seems to be distant, as though wondering what he’s doing in such a situation.

I'd say you're right. The expression that he has on his face is that of a man who, unprepared and unaccustomed to battle, finds himself entering an era where he might be expected to perform militarily. The question here is, will he be able to pull it off and establish himself as a warrior president or will he hide himself in a morass of meaningless bluster and rhetoric. I'm betting on the latter.
He’s in over his head, Petraeus might as well be speaking Greek for all Obama understands.
I dont think the haloed one wants to even think about this, but General Petraeus would never respond to a query in this way unless he knew it would be seen as acceptable to CiC. Maybe a cheap mindgame on the mullahs but they’d know Petraeus does not go in this direction on his own.
He would rather be living it up on Air Force One or playing golf. Petraeus is wasting Zero’s precious time with these small matters.
Let me see.... 0bama refers to Iran as “The Islamic Republic of Iran” every time he speaks about that country. Every American I know calls the country IRAN. Barack’s Muslim background leads me to believe that he would wait until Iran would use a nuclear warhead before he would even think about doing a preemptive attack on Iran.
