EWARK, N.J. (AP) A United Airlines jetliner damaged its right wing when the landing gear failed to fully deploy Sunday at Newark Liberty International Airport making for a frightening few moments for passengers before an "unbelievably smooth" touchdown that drew their praise.
All 53 people aboard got off the plane safely. And all the passengers will be getting refunds of their fares.
Flight 634 from Chicago was approaching the airport about 9 a.m. when the plane suddenly began ascending again, said passenger Paul Wasylyszyn of Chicago.

Just another reason NOT TO FLY United!
Correction, A-319.
“...Airbus 319’s right main landing gear did not extend...”
If it ain’t Boeing I ain’t going!
Depending on how hard it sat down on that right engine, some major internal damage could have been transmitted into the wing from the engine pylon structure.
I’ve found United to be among the better ones. Very crowded though.
US Airways is always late and has obnoxious flight attendants.
American recently had 3 bad landings.
Delta lets underwear bombers on.
Flying is getting to be so miserable and possibly hazardous to a persons health, with being exposed to repeated doses of penetrating ionizing radiation (body scanning machines and such).
Agreed-you’re better off taking the train. And bring back ocean liners!;)
As a result, Homeland security will search all boarding passengers for hydraulic fluid.
Almost every other part of the operation revolts me. Over the years I can't tell you haw many damaged pieces of luggage I have dragged from baggage claim. I have learned not to complain because United works “The Chicago Way”, they're NASTY!
Yeah I don’t check my bags on them either. In general I only fly when I have to for business.
When I want to get somewhere in S. America I fly LAN Chile. The equipment is good, the crews well trained, polite and helpful and the food is good. FREE WINE is an added bonus!
Try Alaska, though you may want to stay off the 727’s.
LAN doesn’t own ANY 727’s!
Fleet age: http://www.airfleets.net/ageflotte/LAN%20Airlines.htm

Boeing 777 2 0.7 years On 49 operating this aircraft type LAN Airlines is number 4
TOTAL 69 4.9 years The calculation of the fleet age can be truncated because it is only based on the Supported aircraft
Alaska apparently doesn’t use any anymore either.

I don’t get why they can’t just TELL us why our flights are being delayed. I had a 2.5 hour delay in the Detroit airport this evening, waiting for a delayed connecting flight to Newark. Over and over again, the only explanation they gave was that the delay was due to “Newark ATC” (air traffic control). I suppose if I’d hiked around the airport far enough I could probably have found a CNN-TV covering what was happening at Newark, but it would be so much simpler if they’d just TELL us Newark has a runway closed due to plane that landed without all its landing gear down. What’s the big effing secret? I’m sure it was all over at least the local NYC are news.
The last time I flew commercially was in 1965 and I have not missed it at all. I enjoy driving and have no problem at all jumping in my car and going wherever.
Things being what they are these days I can not see myself ever again boarding a commercial aircraft. people that absolutely must travel frequently ought to look into getting their private pilots licence and do it that way. It’s a ton of fun and if there is a bomb aboard at least you’ll know you put it there.
Bush’s fault.
