The surge in gun sales after the election of Barack Obama in 2008 has apparently prompted a surge in applications for permits to carry concealed weapons.
The panic buying started in November after Obamas election victory, First Stop Pawn owner Mark Blote said. People bought semi-automatic assault rifles, ammunition and equipped themselves with everything they needed to load their own ammunition. Some people were afraid that Obama would press for tougher regulations of gun ownership, Blote said.
The bottom line is people were afraid of what might happen, so they started stocking up

One of the other reasons for having a CCW that none of this breathless reporting mentions is that when you have a CCW in many states, you no longer need to pay the NCIC check fee when you transfer a firearm. If you do a lot of buying/selling of guns without a FFL, the CCW pays for itself typically in as little as five transactions.
The bottom line is people were afraid of what might happen, so they started stocking up.
