A remote-controlled bomb killed a Tehran University nuclear scientist today, state media reported, in an attack which Iran blamed on US and Israeli agents.

The blast which killed professor Massoud Ali-Mohammadi occurred at a time of heightened tension in the Islamic Republic, seven months after a disputed presidential election plunged the major oil producer into turmoil.

Time to send Mossad a "Thank You" card.

But a US official today rejected as "absurd" Iranian accusations that the United States had a role in the killing of a Tehran University nuclear scientist.

I agree. Zer0 would never approve such a mission. I vote for the Mossad's being responsible.

Gee, I’d hate to be a life-long target of the Mossad. My neck would get tired from looking over my shoulder.

This sounds like the typical Israeli way of going at things. While noisy skirmishes and threats take place on the world stage and gain headlines, Israel is out there quietly with drones and snipers "liquidating" individuals it considers to be high security threats. Sometimes the equipment is home grown, and sometimes it is purchased from the USA. I don't know that Israel has ever "liquidated" anybody directly on US soil (the attack on the Liberty close to Israel notwithstanding), but they are more determined hounds than was Dog the Bounty Hunter.

I find it funny they blamed the United States. You know Obambi wants them to have nukes.

re: Tehran University nuclear scientist

Seems to be about as dangerous a position these days as being the new head of the Palestinian Authority! It was just a month ago when one of them went missing. Of course Iran accused the US of taking him. And then before that another one was said to have defected to our side.

For a while there every person named to succeed Yasser Arafat died a violent death shortly after their appointment. It was reaching a point where they would say they had a new leader, but refused to say who it was!

Yes. For his martyrdom, he gets 72 glowing Helen Thomases, with 10 Bella Abzugs to be named later.

This is the absolute minimum Mossad should be doing, if they did it and he was involved in weapons programs.

I read that he had spoken out against the regime and he may not have been directly involved in Iranian weapon programs, in which case the regime gets to silence a critic and point a finger at the west.

If and when the Israelis or the Americans go after the Iranian weapons program, we or they should emphasize inflicting causualties on key personnel. None of this bombing an empty office building at 3:00 AM. The attacks should be at 10:30 on a Tuesday morning to kill as many of the trained personnel as possible.

He was a Mousavi supporter according to this article

http://www.time.com/time/world/article/0,8599,1953045,00.html

He wasn’t really public though, his name was just published on a list of Iranian professors who support Mousavi. Doesn’t sound like he had much if anything to do with Iran’s nuclear program either. He’s published a few papers, all dealing with theoretical physics.

So there’s no real clear-cut motive here.

They did kill a US engineer in Europe who was working to help Saddam develop a long range artillery gun that can lob shells from Iraq to Isreal

Sometimes not knowing creates more fear. Maybe a general fear among Iranian nuclear scientists that their chosen profession has suddenly become dangerous?

a lot of people are quick to thank Mosad, but I am not so sure that it’s responsible for the attack. This fellow was pro-reform and worked at the university where all the rebelling students were holed up during the election.

This could be a case of propaganda, blaming it on the US/Israel in order to promote western hatred, when it was an inside job.
