[Walter Williams] Global Warming Is a Religion
Jewish World Review ^ | January 13, 2010 | Walter Williams

Posted on 01/13/2010 5:28:44 AM PST by rhema

| Manmade global warming, for many, is an Earth-worshipping religion. The essential feature of any religion is that its pronouncements are to be accepted on the basis of faith as opposed to hard evidence. Questioning those pronouncements makes one a sinner. No one denies that the Earth's temperature changes. Millions of years ago, much of our planet was covered by ice, at some places up to a mile thick, a period some scientists call "Snowball Earth." Today, the Earth is not covered by a mile of ice; a safe conclusion is that there must have been a bit of global warming. I don't know the cause of that warming, but I'd wager everything I own that it was not caused by coal-fired electric generation plants, incandescent light bulbs and SUVs tooling up and down the highways.

The very idea that mankind can make significant parametric changes to the Earth has to be the height of arrogance. How about a few questions because temperature is just one characteristic of the Earth. The Earth's orbit is another. If all 6.5 billion of us, all at once, started jumping up and down for a little while, do you think we'd change the Earth's orbit or rotation? Do you think mankind could change the direction and timing of the ocean's tides? Is there anything that mankind can do to stop or start a tsunami or hurricane? You say, "Williams, it's stupid to suggest that mankind could change the Earth's orbit or rotation, ocean tides or cause or stop a tsunami or hurricane!" You're right and it's also stupid to think that mankind's activities can make globalized changes in the Earth's temperature.

Nonetheless, there is much at stake in getting people to subscribe to the global warming religion.

It is fruitless to present evidence and scientific analysis to the true AGW believers,

because you are directly attacking their personal significance when you do so.

The reason they believe in AGW is because it is their only worldly way of making their lives “matter”. They can’t be significant in their relationship to God, because that wouldn’t be “cool”, and besides, they’d have to give up too much behavior that they like to do.

With slight disagreement with the great Walter Williams but IMO, Global Warming, like it’s cousin socialism, is just a branch in the religion of Humanism(worshiping of man).

Of course it is! Communists tolerate religion, but just barely. The only reason Stalin didn’t abolish the church is because it would have caused an uproar. But if communists can replace God with Mother Earth, the problem is solved.

Man dies from hypothermia in Miami...
http://www.nbcmiami.com/news/local-beat/Miamis-First-Cold-Weather-Death-Confirmed-81248747.html

http://americanelephant.wordpress.com/2008/05/19/32000-scientists-dissent-from-global-warming-consensus/

32,000 American scientists, including over 9,000 Ph.D’s, have now signed the “Oregon Petition” rejecting Kyoto and other similar measures, and the premise of “global warming” itself. The petition reads:

“We urge the United States government to reject the global warming agreement that was written in Kyoto, Japan in December, 1997, and any other similar proposals. The proposed limits on greenhouse gases would harm the environment, hinder the advance of science and technology, and damage the health and welfare of mankind.

There is no convincing scientific evidence that human release of carbon dioxide, methane, or other greenhouse gasses is causing or will, in the foreseeable future, cause catastrophic heating of the Earth’s atmosphere and disruption of the Earth’s climate. Moreover, there is substantial scientific evidence that increases in atmospheric carbon dioxide produce many beneficial effects upon the natural plant and animal environments of the Earth.”

See my tagline... :)

Brannon Howse, who has studied the humanism movement, has shifted his viewpoint on it. It’s not Secular Humanism that is the biggest threat (of propagating Satanism), but “Cosmic” Humanism, which is bastardizing Christianity, and being embraced by formerly Bible believing churches, making them apostate.

No doubt about it-Rush has been saying this for years. And, when you think about it, it’s a religion not unlike the faith of the American Indian tribes of early American history through the 19th century and the descendants thereof, even today.

Rom 1:22-23,25
Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools 23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like mortal human beings and birds and animals and reptiles.
25 They exchanged the truth about God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator—who is forever praised. Amen.

They SHOULD establish (a careful word choice there) global warming as a religion. Then we can correctly (for once) invoke “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion” to refuse Congressional global warming taxes, global warming building requirements, global warming restrictions, etc.

They've already replaced confession with the IRS and going to the doctor!

I just read in my local Gannett rag that the average American spends $7K a year for doctors/drugs, and the average retiree takes 30 meds a day.
If that's so, this country really is sick.

Global warming is all the rage because it suits perfectly some people’s political agenda. This is a teachable moment on how one group can change the culture, and thereby change the political goals of the country. The global warming craze is no accident of history, it’s intentional.

izzatzo;
"...when you think about it, it’s a religion not unlike the faith of the American Indian tribes of early American history through the 19th century and the descendants thereof, even today."

Now I'll have to disagree with you there. I'm certainly no expert on American Indians or their various religions but your statement reveals not just a lack a study, but swallowing whole the gaia theory usurping of all things Native American to lend credence to the false global warming hysteria.

American Indians lived off the land. They experienced survival of the fittest on a daily basis, not just in a personal way but in everything around them. That type of survival has been homogenized over time into what we know as capitalism.

That they might develop a respect, a reverence, or a religion based on the wonders of staying alive in such a dangerous world shouldn't surprise.

Placing 'Mother Earth' where others have Allah, Abraham, or Jesus, is no reason to judge. Michael Mann, James Lovelock, David Suzuki, and Al Gore are not Native Americans, and combined they probably know less than you and I do about Native American Religion.
