Retail Sales Unexpectedly Tank In December

Wait, we thought retail sales rebounded in December. At least that was the impression we got from per-store measures. Something's amiss.
----
AP: Retail sales fell in December as demand for autos, clothing and appliances all slipped, a disappointing finish to a year in which sales dropped by the largest amount in 27 years of records.
The weakness in consumer demand highlighted the formidable hurdles facing the economy as it struggles to recover from the deepest recession in seven decades.

Per-store sales are up, it’s just that ...
There ain’t that many stores any more.
OH NO, UNEXPECTEDLY !!!!
lol. Unexpectedly and jobs saved: a few words to fondly remember of Bamas first year. lol
You coulda fooled me. The wife spent a bundle on everyone. She works retail and said her store was top earner in the region with more sales than last year.
Sales are dropping VERY hard in some areas in sectors which would not be expected. Money is becoming VERY tight for a lot of individuals and little or no work can be found. This has very little to do with the cold weather — no money. The financial reports are lies.
The December sales reports have been very, very quiet.
They need new experts, they never expect anything
That word “unexpected” demonstrates just how completely clueless those in the economics realm are. Of course, those who actually RUN businesses would say that it was not unexpected.
In order for this to be unexpected, one must 1) be in the government, 2) be of the progressive persuation (e.g., math illiterate, and 3) never have made a profit in their sorry lives.
They need new experts, they never expect anything
Spot on, I wasn’t expecting that. Your comment was unexpected, but funny. Groove on GeronL.
I think I am going to have a stomach ache, too many bowls of Unexpected-O’s this morning.
The good news is the economy’s performance is setting the Democrats up for slaughter in 2010. The bad news is, the Democrats continue to do everything possible to wreck our economy: 1) minimum wage hike; 2) cap and trade; 3) tax anything that moves; 4) spend uncontrollably; 5) regulate uncontrollably. Democrats think the economy operates independently of government. They believe they can take and tinker endlessly and the economy will simply “adjust”. We’re all getting a very hard lesson in economics.
Yes, there is apparently now a headline macro containing the word “Unexpectedly” to be used over all stories re the economy.
6) Legalize illegal aliens.
I always find it humurous that the government wants people to carry less debt...and live within their means...but then when they do they panic that people aren't spending enough money.
Can't have it both ways.
Far from unexpected, I think many of us here expected lower numbers.
“Unexpected” means “the numbers are so bad, we couldn’t spin this story if we bolted it to a Pratt & Whitney jet turbine”.
As an engineer, the word “unexpected” isn’t in our lexicon.
“Gee, it was unexpected that the bridge fell down. It was unexpected that the boiler blew up. It was unexpected the steering gear would freeze like that. I just didn’t expect those things.” — doesn’t play very well with the boss, the grieving relatives or the shareholders.
They need new experts, indeed!
The question is how many locations closed before December, thereby funneling customers to less locations, thereby making existing stores sales show an increase.
Now, it doesn’t really matter if her stores has little to no closures...how is the area as a whole doing? Strip malls empty, little shopping niches empty...customers are then forced into bigger and better locations to shop.
December sales were an illusion of contraction.
My investments in Duct Tape, superglue, Elmer glue, Gorrilla Glue, JB Weld are doing well. I’m not buying “stuff”.
Very good point.

Unexpected MY A**. Barrack Hussein Obama is following his Marxist, Progressive roots...in a serious attempt to take this country to hell.
I’ve been in retail some 30+ years. When I heard them last week talking about the great sales for December, based on existing stores, I couldn’t believe my ears. You can’t just not count, not adjust for lost stores, lost locations.
A million dollar location vs. a $350,000 location just a few miles away. Shut down the $350,000 and force their spending customers into the bigger location. What changes is just the dynamics. Location one experiences an increase in sales, but not the full $350,000 because part of them won’t move, part of them are not spending and you have the same dynamic happening at location one.
Just the spending pattern is hidden. The sales increase is an illusion.
Perpetual opposite day...
And the Emperor Maobama has saved us from a certain Bush Depression, the greatest in history! In other words, “UNEXPECTED” is a code word for “It's Bush's fault again.”
Retail Forward, Retail Metrics and RetailSails concluded that same-store sales jumped 3.0 percent in the month while ICSCs figures showed a 2.8 percent improvement. That made December the best month for retailers since July 2008 or April 2008, depending on whose numbers you look at.

UNEXPECTED!
“UNEXPECTED?!!”
To anybody but a Democrat...is completely predictable...
Deregulate..Detax...rinse..repeat..and in about 4-5years things’ll be back on track...
Unexpected is the new drinking game.
I have been saying it since October...just WAIT for the Feb job numbers and the March ones as well. Once the realization that all of those seasonal jobs are over and done with? Forget about it...hello 11.6% unemployment.
Ping. Over here.
Ok, two unexpectedly articles in one day! New unemployment claims were higher than “expected” and now retail sales in Dec are lower than “expected”. Wow, these demwit economists are right on the ball aren’t they?
I, for one, was surprised at the headlines that said retails were actually UP from last year. In fact, I was shocked.
I also figured it was “fun with numbers”. I just didn’t believe they could be so shallow and short sighted with their headlines. It is always bad to lie when it is easy for a person to verify your statements. It’s gonna bite you.
“Unexpectedly!”
That word, again... everybody, take a shot...
