Looking for idea help from Freepers.
I have a dear friend who just spent the last year setting up a legitimate charity that was recently approved by the IRS.
She started this charity 'A Gift For Life' as a result of her young daughter suddenly having Leukemia and going through bone marrow treatments to emerge free of cancer symptoms. The experience was so life-transforming to her that she wanted to bring the fantastic cancer fighting infrastructure of the USA to her family's country of origin, Ecuador.
She is a beautiful honest person who resides in Florida with 3 chidren and who loves America and the ideals it stands for.
Recently she was approached by the Haitian Minister of Education who desperately pleaded to her for Ambulances of all things. They have only 3 ambulances in all of Haiti.
My friend is calling hospitals and other state organizations to see if there are old ambulances that they plan on scrapping for new ones.
If any Freepers can help out with ideas or actions, please contact me.

Not trying to be mean here but even the best ambulance doesn’t run without fuel or maintenance ... I doubt sending ambulances will be helpful.
What country is missing here? Does anyone know what the Dominican Republic’s Army is doing right now? Are they mobilizing to keep Haitians from coming over the mountains or around in boats?

The sad fact of the matter is that triage is being attempted on a country scale. What is more important - getting basic supplies in (food, water, medicine) using awd vehicles, or trying to use scarce resources to bring in old ambulances that cannot travel the roads in their current state? These are items that need to be in place BEFORE tragidy, not after.
True but there are cities with streets. The ambulances will be put to good use I am sure. Food, medicine and clothing are on the way. But ambulances, even old ones would help to alert and clear traffic in a rush to get a life that hangs in the balance. The need is genuine.
I would imagine that ambulances are no longer Haiti’s priority need.
With no gas, ruined roads, and collapsed or overburdened hospitals, ambulances would just take up space.
They need food, water, basic necessities.

How about that red-hot socialized Cuban healthcare the Dems have been talking about for 20 years? Why aren’t they pitching in with all their surplus vehicles and healthcare workers?
Reality time Hostage - anyone buried by debris is probably dead by now - and an ambulance will not help them - airevac would. Reports have debris cluttering city streets - fallen down buildings.
It is triage time - get the materials to stop a full blow epidemic which has the potential to kill far more than the actual earthquake did. This requires a huge logistics effort just to be able to get the supplies on the ground in the first place. What makes more sense at this stage - an old ambulance with no gasoline on island to run it, or a forklift capable of moving ton of life sustaining cargo?
The day will come for ambulances - but not until things are stabilized there.

Greeting to you all Thank you for your prayer. My daughter and I are safe but there are no words and pictures to explain what I saw. This catastrophe is cruel; right now there are over 100.000 people died and 200000000000 people hurt by this situation. My school and my church ground in Cite Soleil have about 2000 people there for safety. Everybody is on the street, they don’t want to get inside their house. We need water and medical assistant and food for now. The school wall and half of the school building are completely destroyed. We are asking you for solidarity. Please stop with the disparagement of a real need. Other materials including gas are on the way. This was a simple and special request for those that may know of an old ambulance that still runs and functions.
Of course an ambulance will help. The disaster has hurt people and they will still be hurt for weeks and weeks after.
So I understand the reality, just read the posts I made previously.

Might have helped if the vehicles were there BEFORE the quake- but this is too late.

What I am after is someone who knows of an old functioning ambulance that is not in use. Once I get that knowledge I will contact the charity and ask to them to look into it.
Besides I doubt requests for ambulances would ever qualify as fraud.
You and a few others seem to think you know better than everyone else.

Ummm, the Haitian Minister of Education is making these appeals from a yahoo.com address? To some random tiny non-profit related to leukemia?? And for “two non for profit [sic]organizations based in Haiti , that have been in existence for over a decade”, ADEN and GAPEL have a remarkably low internet presence — try Googling < aden gapel haiti >. This is a scam. And why are you posting all these e-mail addresses on an open forum where they’ll be promptly picked up by spambots?
