More Products, Including Tylenol Extra Strength and Rolaids, Recalled Due to Noxious Chemical Fears
###
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration slammed Tylenol manufacturer McNeil Healthcare LLC during a media briefing this morning for what it called a slow response to problems at a facility in Puerto Rico that led to consumers becoming sickened by tainted pills.
"McNeil should have acted faster," said Deborah Autor, director of the FDA's Office of Compliance, of the arm of Johnson & Johnson that manufactures Tylenol products, adding "When something smells bad, literally or figuratively, they must aggressively investigate and solve the problem."
A recall of Tylenol products that began last month with the popular Tylenol arthritis caplet expanded this morning to include more than two dozen other over-the-counter products manufactured by McNeil.

~~Product recall ... check your bottles for
the lot #’s.
FYI .. I’ve had my big bottle of Extra Strength
Tylenol for over 6 mos. The lot # is on the list.

In its statement, the company advised consumers who purchased the affected products to stop using them and contact McNeil for information about how to get a refund or a replacement.
The company provided the address for its Web site,
www.mcneilproductrecall.com, as well as a toll-free number:
(888) 222-6036.
What is the date on these drugs, we have Tylenol and Benedryl in the house
You have to check the exact product type and lot #’s here

I have no idea, sorry.
Rolaids and Motrin too!?!?!
Grrrr!
I avoid tylenol since it’s worse for the liver than rot gut but it looks like I have to move to Tums :|
We hit the jackpot!

EVERYONE...use DGL for stomach problems (Deglycerrized Licorice) - you can buy it in the health sections of most grocery stores....it will not destroy your stomach, and protect it from other issues, especially if you take aspirin or other pain killers that hurt the stomach lining. I used to have to take 6+ 325mg aspirin a day...DGL saved my stomach.
Thanks for the ping, Starwise.
I had no idea they’d added to the list. Will check the Benadryl package I bought about a month ago. Actually, I haven’t bought any Tylenol since that scare from a looong time ago.
Your bottle may not be on the list.
Check my link above.
I love the shady reporting on this:
“Johnson & Johnson recalled some Tylenol Arthritis Caplets in November and December due to the smell, which caused nausea, stomach pain, vomiting and diarrhea.”
An odor would *not* cause pain and diarrhea, the chemical which caused the odor could. They haven’t even reported what the chemical is!
Uh oh ...
Doesn’t matter - J&J quality control is apparently lacking and risking my pregnant wife’s and my health isn’t worth it.
Good bye Motrin and Rolaids - Hello Advil, Bayer and Tums
I’ve heard of it but never really checked it out, I’ll have to take a look. Thanks!
Just realized .. according to the article,
they were manufactured in Puerto Rico.
Several years ago, my company stopped using wood pallets in our facilities. We went to metal and plastic, eventually all plastic.
Why? Because there is a bacteria that grows on wood that could have ended up in our products. Looks like McNeil has found that out the hard way.
Extra-Strength Tylenol
Bingo!
half a bottle left.. gulp.
Wow .. I bet Puerto Rican wood gets
moldy down there in the tropics.
Thanks for the info.
after reading THIS story, you’re going to WISH the Tylenol products killed you...

just got back from PR - very moldy and very sloppy place.
Nice people, tho.... and the beaches! ahhhhhhhhh........

Called the number and was told that due to the volume of calls they were unable to take my call.
Called the local Pathmark super market where I made the purchase and they insisted ‘they know nothing’.
Best that your pregnant wife take none of those products by any manufacturer.
I saw that earlier, but didn’t read the article.
I think he’s going to first order an infiltrator onto the birther threads to check on a poster by the name of starwise...lol.
You’re kidding .. was it after 5?
Perhaps there’s a form on the website.
I’ll try that tomorrow.
LOL .. don’t let them taze me, sis ..
I’m stunned that a big bottle of Tylenol
I’ve had for probably more than 6 mos. from
Costco is on the list.
I hear they reprogram you.
I’ll have to wait until you start talking like a democrat to know you’ve been captured and reprogrammed.
I’m not really laughing.
In fact, we belong on that thread, Missy.
Both calls were made this morning when I saw the info online.
This is just awful.
My new grandbaby was given baby Tylenol following her first inoculation. She had big time stomach upset following the dose and of course, my son thought it was from the shot. Most likely it was from the Tylenol.
Not enough for the FDA to criticize them for slow response. They need to be fined, big time.
And I’m a stock holder. But I don’t care, they need to take a big hit for this danger to everyone using any of their products.

I have a busy day tomorrow .. cooking for a belated Christmas celebration on Sunday ...sweet sleep, dear O .. ;) Be alert for all developments ..
I’m going too. See you tomorrow.
Prayers for you and HUGS.
Oh no .. that’s awful. Poor little one.
How long did the problem last ?
You’re right .. there needs to be
suitable accountability here by the
FDA.
I just took 2 of those Tylenol today for
my aching knee .. I rarely take them, but
have had no problems at any time with it.
God bless you little one .. keep us posted
on what you hear .. I’ll do the same.
Extra-Strength Tylenol.....Lot # checked...close, but not the exact #.
Baby was only upset for a couple of hours. Can you imagine. She got the shot early afternoon. Had the Baby Tylenol when they brought her home and she didn’t settle down till about 9 pm.
She’s been fine since. But this makes me so mad.
I just bought a bottle of Tylenol a few weeks ago for the first time. I usually use Advil. I never even opened the Tylenol.
As far as J&J, NO EXCUSES. All this nonsense that the people were only sick for a day so it’s not so bad. Oh really. Vomiting, diarrhea ONLY for a day. People take any one of those products because they aren’t feeling well in the first place and then they were REALLY not feeling well.
The problems were linked to the presence of a chemical called 2,4,6-tribromoanisole (TBA), which results from the breakdown of a chemical in wood pallets used to transport and store packaging materials for the drugs.
It's a breakdown product of 2,4,6-trichloroanisaole (TCA), a wood preservative.
It has an unusual moldy, musty, or mildew-like odor. A whine con-uh-sewer might say it's corked...

More on the recall:
**NOTE: I thought Motrin was in the copy I first
saw, but then when I went to the site, it was not
shown amongst the products, so I didn’t include it
in the original post.
Now MOTRIN IS named again, so I feel confident it
IS on the recall list.
CHECK YOUR BOTTLE LOT #’S .. I have one that I
purchased over 6 months ago.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Johnson & Johnson issued a massive recall Friday of over-the-counter drugs including Tylenol, Motrin and St. Joseph’s aspirin because of a moldy smell that has made people sick.
It was the second such recall in less than a month because of the smell, which regulators said was first reported to McNeil in 2008. Federal regulators criticized the company, saying it didn’t respond to the complaints quickly enough, wasn’t thorough in how it handled the problem and didn’t inform the Food and Drug Administration quickly.
The recall includes some batches of regular and extra-strength Tylenol, children’s Tylenol, eight-hour Tylenol, Tylenol arthritis, Tylenol PM, children’s Motrin, Motrin IB, Benadryl Rolaids, Simply Sleep, and St. Joseph’s aspirin.
I just called them ... I did a #67 to block my number,
followed the prompts to receive a coupon, choose my
product, punched in the lot # and exp date, got the
confirmation it was on the recall list, and spoke the
description and size of the bottle.
You’re asked to either let them use the public info for
your address or say the address, which I did. Your info
is played back for confirmation, and you’re told you’ll
receive a coupon in 3 to 4 weeks.
So, it appears to be a straightforward process.
Well that’s great. Now I have to go dumpster diving and get the stuff I tossed last night.
Good to see they are making good on their mistake.
What about the generics?
BTTT
I feel your pain. I have a huge bottle of Motrin that is on the list. They offer a replacement coupon but I want a refund.
Homeopathics here I come.
This recall is from Johnson & Johnson’s
McNeil Healthcare LLC, the manufacturer
of Tylenol and the other list of products,
which were apparently manufactured in
Puerto Rico.
Okay!
I read the links. Just wondering if any of the generic products for Tylenol were made in the same plant and branded differently. I haven’t seen any indication of this yet. I use the generic acetaminophen daily.
Thanks for that info. We have Tylenol to swapout here, not sure if the Rolaids was bad.. it worked. :-)
The IMPORTANT issue is the Lot # .. be
sure to check out your particular item
against their list.
It may end your heartburn, but could give
you another problem, if it’s contaminated.
