how dare you refer to anyone as a “looter”?

they are merely seizing what belongs to them as “the people”

[sarcasm, but someone actually wrote nearly those exact words on Twitter last night -— then expressed deep shame for America that anyone here could call anyone at all a “looter”]

They next thing they and Obama will be looting is your retirement plan. They are already talking about a form of an American annuity because it will be much safer.

Argentina did this last year. They stole all the private pension fo rthe ‘good of the country.”

I might point out that the so called ‘looter’ guy doesn’t seem to be standing inside a store looting anything.

Besides, what else are these people supposed to do to survive?

Are there any grocery stores still standing? Where one can ‘check out’ and pay properly for food?

It is easier to criticize, than it is to walk a mile in their shoes.

(and I’m not directing that at you, Jet)

guess you have trouble with reading comprehension, because the LA Times photo caption asserted that the people in the photo were looting a store......

you’ll have to take it up with the photographer or whoever supplied that caption for the LA Times

The identification of the shirt-wearer as a looter was made by the LA Times.

And why should I believe what some caption in the LA Times says? For all we can see is someone just standing there. That's all. If you want to believe everything you read, that's fine with me. Go for it.

You are correct. Looting is when, as in LA, you violently burn down buildings, kill people and break into businesses cause you can. This area is devastated and I, for one, would be breaking into anything I could to get food and water. Any man here who has actually been in that circumstance would do the same or he’s not a real man.

The people need help, not looters and not whiners who are afraid to criticize looting.

Perhaps then it would help if someone would define what a LOOTER is, and whether the severity of the situation justifies 'grabbing what you can'.

After all, what are their choices? Can they even take their 'loot' and go home? What homes?

Does anyone here in the US understand what a 7.0 followed by 30 or more aftershocks is even like?

Where are the grocery stores that they can go buy some food at?

We know that 'help' is on the way, do they?

How long will it be before everyone gets supplies of food and water from 'rescuers'?

If you were in their shoes, would you just wait (and die)?

Would some reporter sitting at a desk in LA use a little hype to help sell more newspapers?

I am not whining about security forces arresting those who are looting (for no cause other than profit).

However, as bad as it seems to be, any 'store' that has food or water should be letting people take all they can. Or is the profit of the merchants more important than the lives of the injured and starving?

All the damage caused by the earthquake wouldn’t have happen if they built their buildings using California building codes. Absolutely nothing at all would have fallen except the economy, that is.

The issue is not whether the person is a "looter". The issue is the chastising of the FReeper that created this thread.

You agreed with the poster that impugned the original poster of this thread as having disgraced FR by having used the term "looter" to describe the person in the pic.

The LA Times characterized that individual as a "looter".

If you have an issue with the use of term, address it to the appropriate party.

It’s not a question of “believing” everything one reads or sees. But rather basing a post on a reporter’s point of view. Don’t we do that all the time? Otherwise, we should all double-check, verify, and conduct a factual trial before we make any postings.

one still photo captures only an instant in time

none of us here can “know” what was happening before or after that photo was taken

It was the LA Times and/or the photographer or someone associated with the publication of that photo who gave the world the “looter” caption

maybe it was made up out of thin air, maybe not..... maybe we will know more later maybe not (about that specific scene)

but we DO know that it was not anyone on FR who gave the photo the “looter” caption -— it was the very liberal media

all we “know” right now is that (1) the LA Times is reponsible for the assertion that a store was being looted and that the guy in the Obama t-shirt was taking part as a “looter” (2) there is no evidence whatsoever in the photo of any food or water being secured on the scene... (3) so it is at least quite plausible to suspect that the photographer saw many other kinds of items being “looted” from the store...... items that were/are unrelated to survival??

b/c it is d——d difficult to believe that liberal editors and photographers for the LA Times go around terming people “looters” who are desperately securing water, food and baby formula

maybe the LA Times liberals blew this one, or maybe the caption is a good characterization of what was going on before and after the photo was snapped, maybe just beyond frame etc.

one thing we do know is that the original use of the word “looter” in relation to the Obama-guy in this photo came from the MSM and not from anyone on this thread
