QUINCY, Mass. (AP) - Massachusetts GOP Senate hopeful Scott Brown is criticizing the White House plan to tax banks that received federal bailout money.

At a rally in a Boston suburb, Brown said the tax would be passed on to ordinary consumers through higher service and ATM fees. President Barack Obama says banks are paying out big bonuses now so they also can afford to pay the tax.

For those of us far away from Massachusetts, I hope that somebody will post accurate information about the crowd sizes and crowd enthusiasm at the Brown and Coakley events this weekend.

This may tell us something about likely turnout on Tuesday...

First, Brown is completely right, but I’m not sure liberals (also those who are thinking to vote for him) will understand. Socialist media are already at work.
Second, the Kenny on the ballot should retire. There is no reason for him not to endorse our candidate.

- The taxpayers give the banks ‘X’ amount of dollars.
- The banks charge the taxpayers ‘X’ amount of dollars to pay the taxpayers back.

Hmmm... the banks just pocketed doubled the original amount of the loans.

Here's what the DemonRATs are sending out to raise money...

I just got up to Martha Coakley's campaign HQ to help her win Tuesday's crucial special election. I have to tell you -- this isn't like anything Massachusetts has ever seen.

It's happening right after the holidays, so a lot of people haven't even heard about it. Meanwhile, the same guys behind the Swift Boat ads are taking over the airwaves to distort Martha's record, and the same far-right tea-party crowd that's attacking President Obama is funding her opponent.

The stakes in this race are incredibly high. If we don't hold this seat, a right-wing Republican will hold Sen. Ted Kennedy's old seat until at least 2012 -- and we'll lose a crucial vote in the Senate for health reform and the agenda we fought so hard for last year.

That's why we're going all out in Massachusetts with a massive effort to lock up a Democratic victory. But we can only afford to keep this battle up against the far right through Election Day if folks like you chip in.

Please donate $5 or more to help us make Martha Coakley the next senator from Massachusetts.

Democratic ads are highlighting the key differences between Martha, a long-time public servant and one of the nation's best attorneys general, and her extreme Republican opponent who would walk in lockstep with Mitch McConnell and national GOP power brokers.

And our organizers are engaging volunteers by the thousands to make sure Obama voters make it back to the polls.

But we need your help to keep it going. Please donate $5 or more to the Democratic Party to support our work, including our efforts to elect Martha Coakley:

Let's win this,

Hari

Press Secretary
Democratic National Committee

I hope that somebody will post accurate information about the crowd sizes and crowd enthusiasm at the Brown and Coakley events this weekend.

I just witnessed a Coakley campaign stop.I was driving by and figured I'd see what her turnout would be. It was in Lynn, a blue collar city of 90,000 plus. It's a soon to be minority majority city. The event was at a popular diner in downtown. There were maybe 75+ people there, and 95% were, as I like to call them,"stagehands". Holding signs in the parking lot, and on the sidewalk. Most of the stagehands were kids 17-22 years old. And a few union types thrown in for good measure.

Before she arrived I was listening for car horns in support for her for about 10 min. Pretty quiet in my opinion. The teenage stagehands had to cajole a few times for a toot of the horn. Unless of course at the time they weren't texting which quite a few were doing instead of waving to the motorists which is what you're supposed to do.

When Coakley pulled up the stagehands did their duty and made some noise. She got out of the car which was directed where to go by some operatives and got out and did some gladhandling with the help. She met a couple of local hacks(one I know. He's a state rep. Nice guy but will tow the Dem line and will do whatever he's told). She proceeded in to the diner and I went on my way.

Other than the stagehands, no one else showed up.I'm not counting the half dozen union goons off to the side, looking bored and drinking coffee. People stopped to see what was going on, but after a minute or so, they went on their way.

On the way about a mile away I saw some Brown supporters at the Lynn/ Nahant rotary. More horns were heard including mine. The most encouraging thing that all 15 people were waving to the cars, and they all were the right age group. 30 to 50's. Taxpayers. None were being paid to be there. You can tell who is there because they want to be there and the ones who were told (or paid) to be there.

I may start a vanity thread to see if others here are seeing the same thing.....

There is no reason for him not to endorse our candidate.

There is one reason, he's a stalking horse for Coakley. She's the one who insisted he be included in the final debate. I don't think it will work any more than it did in NJ.

The problem, is that Obama wants to impose this tax/fee on banks that did not get/take bailout money. The banks have mostly paid the money back (interest free).
I have no problem with banks paying back what they agreed to pay. I like, but do not agree with the idea that they have to pay fees on the loan, like interest that they would charge a customer, and interest on the unpaid amount if its late. But there is no reason to charge other banks who took NO MONEY in the bailout. Also, there needs to be an end to fees, when the money and interest is paid back, just like any other customer. What the banks pay in bonuses, when all monies are paid back is nobodys business except the stock holders. I do think that NO BONUSES should be paid to any person in a bank UNTIL all monies are paid back to the treasury in full. Period. JMO.

I am not a banker but given that Obama and the federal government are looking to control banking why don’t other banks organize and fight the attempted takeover?

The one thing people haven't discussed is the fact that a lot of banks will have just another round of layoffs. For years bank regulators have pressured banks, besides forcing them to make subprime loans, to increase capital. This will just drain more capital.
