At Haiti roadblock, a lesson in power dynamics
LA Times ^ | 1/16/2010 | Joe Mozingo

Posted on 01/16/2010 6:55:03 PM PST by Saije

The giant gray Hueys came from the aircraft carrier Carl Vinson. There was no sign from below of their intention: Were they delivering relief, or Marines?

The crowd began to run, but not away. Hundreds poured across the highway and down a rutted dirt road to a rocky field along the shore, where a collapsed blue sloop listed in the surf.

The prop wash from the landing choppers kicked up grit and small rocks. The people kept running. They piled up at each copter door as the rotors wound down, grabbing and shouting words that the crews surely didn't understand.

The Americans didn't fly off, or open fire. They handed out boxes of bottled water.

When they had finished, they told everyone to back away, which they did, and flew off.

"They came to save our lives," said Golen Parveles, a stout man in a faded golf shirt.

Americans have had a rough relationship with Haiti since the mountainous French colony became the second free republic in the New World after the United States. In modern history, Washington supported the brutal dictatorship of the Duvaliers as part of its Cold War chess game. And three U.S. administrations -- those of George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton and George W. Bush -- took an inconsistent approach to Aristide and the army and paramilitaries who successively ousted him.

Still, Haiti's hopes are always aimed at the U.S.

"After God, we believe in America," said Charles Anes Adams, 34, gratefully drinking some of his water under a mango tree.

I don't think Huey's have flown off carriers for over 20 years. SH-60 / MH-60 Seahawks yes, but Hueys, no.

“but this a repoter and the la slimes and their combined knowledge of us military equipment wouldn’t fill a thimble.”

I don’t think that’s really the point is it? If you’re the guy on the ground dying of thirst a helicopter with American marines on board with water is a gift from above, whatever they’re flying in.

What a crock. Haitians speak english. They risk their lives to come to America. There are tens of thousands here illegally.

There is only love for this country.

I posted this on another thread

After some yrs. of being overhauled, the Carl Vinson was on it’s way to San Diego for homeporting and just ordered to head to Haiti with the crew’s own supplies and disburse.
The Navy knows how to shift gears quick.

My cousin’s son is a crew member on board the Vinson.

Where their is misery, bubbles, and hyper-inflation, there is Soros,

Soros has been in Haiti for about 10 years. As with all Marxist doctine, the influence peddler no doubt instills victimization complexes and rebellion in Haitian your and organizations.

Fokal in Haiti is one of Soros lesser known dirty tentacles. Haiti and Soros have something else in common, Drug trafficking. http://www.haitiaction.net/News/HIP/7_24_7/7_24_7.html

I believe that the USMC is still flying UH-1N Hueys from the “Gator Navy” carriers, LPH’s or LHA’s. However, these gray helos in Haiti were probably Navy SH-60s from the USS Carl Vinson CVN-70.

Plus, how can anyone call a Huey, “giant”, is beyond me! ;-)

(Full disclosure: I used to fly Sikorsky Sea Stallions, CH-53D, just a bit bigger than the UH-1N.)

Interesting ... no respect for the blue helmets but the thought of US Marines was a whole different story. I’ll bet if the order was to secure the country and make conditions safe for the residents and the aid workers, it would happen in a hurry.

As I realize Soros has been buying politicians in Haiti for many years I have to ask why?

"Daddy Warbucks" of Drugs and Death - CFR member George Soros"

http://www.bibliotecapleyades.net/sociopolitica/esp_sociopol_cfr_06.htm

What if Soros unregulated Hedge Fund, with deposits located in drug havens like the Caymen Islands and his Colombian banks, was all a front for money laundering? Nobody really knows where his money is coming from or going to.

"Hedge funds through the years lobbied hard to escape regulation....Legislators and regulators in Europe and the United States are considering much stricter regulations. Italian Finance Minister Giulio Tremonti recently proposed abolishing hedge funds entirely. But the huge sums that hedge funds contribute to political candidates and lobbying in Washington make it unlikely that would happen in the United States."

In PaP, most everybody speaks a little English, not so much so out in the country. But it's a bit hard to understand (especially with rotor blades making a lot of noise right over your head).

I wouldn't call it "bastardized French", that's a little stiff. It's a patois, fairly common in the Caribbean, but French based instead of English based.

My very fluent French-speaking friend had a hard time making herself understood to Creole speakers.

On FOX News tonight they had a “Live report” from on board one of the USMC’s landing craft that was launching a flock of choppers, and I noticed what was surely a “Huey” looking sort of dwarfed by the SH60s and such hovering around like a hummingbird amidst all the scurry.

“What the H— is THAT old antique doing there?!” I wondered - those things have gotta be at least 40 years old!
I really didn’t think that we had any of them still flying in active duty any more.

For an aircraft that wasn’t even supposed to be able to fly, it sure has been one of America’s most versatile and reliable machines for quite a while now.

I’m glad to see them finally airlifting in some of the aid to the people that need it rather than letting it rot at the airport while the victims starve to death because of incompetent bureaucrats.

Obama’s Secretary of Defense wouldn’t allow air drops of supplies because he was afraid that it would cause “riots” with people fighting over stuff.
Sure; so let ‘em starve to death instead while everybody plays Mongolian clusterfuddle at the airport and back at Command Central...

And this nincompoop is in charge of defending America?

God help us!

The 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit is supposed to be in Haitian waters this weekend. They are sailing the USS Bataan there. They fly Hueys off of the Bataan. Not sure if it was there yet, but the sight of Hueys kind of says the Marines got there pretty dang quick. The Battaan also flys CH53's. Here's a link to a story on the Battaan:

The Hueys from the USS Carl Vinson are most likely some of the UH-1Y Venom, which is an upgrade of the older UH-1N model.

http://www.naval-technology.com/projects/uh_1y/

We worked for many years on developing that upgrade along with the AH-1Z, which is even meaner than the AH-1W, for the Navy/Marines.

"...They risk their lives to come to America..."

Yes they have. Today, some are even "Snowbirds" between the two countries!

"...There are tens of thousands here illegally..."

From Plymouth, Massachusetts to Monroe County, Florida.

Not necessarily wonderful, either: some are originally "Ton-Ton-Machoute", and prey on (and torture) Haitians in the U.S.

"...Haitians speak english.."

1) Miami-Dade County has an ordinance that all businesses must provide translations into Spanish and "Creole". Sort-of-French, with much use of the letter "K" ("K" goes largely unused in Spanish).

2) Even those Haitians employed by Monroe County can't be understood in English.

:-/

3) Announcements in Miami Department stores are made in Spanish. (China—followed by India—is shortly to become the largest English-speaking country!)

I am not saying that illegal immigration from Haiti or anywhere else is a good thing. I am saying that it is incorrect to state that Haiti and Haitians HATE America and Americans.

And to suggest that the Dominican Republic is some sort of paradise is ridiculous. There are thousand and thousands of Dominicans here illegally. Living in squalor in NYC and no doubt other big cities. If their home country was paradise they wouldn’t be here.

The reporter could have just written “helicopters,” or he could have taken a few extra minutes and found out what they actually were. Instead, he tried to sound like he knew what he was talking about. IMO, superficial knowledge is the biggest problem with that profession.

“Giant”...apparently this “journalist” hasn’t been around those
twin-rotor “Jolly Green Giants”.
(I’m not military...I think they are CH-42s?)

See ‘em about once or twice a month here in Mid-Missouri.
My inexpert guess is they fly out of Whiteman AFB, or more likely
Fort Leonard Wood.
