Obama makes last-ditch attempt to save Senate seat

BOSTON (AP) - President Barack Obama was making a last-ditch attempt Sunday to save a Democratic-held Senate seat in Massachusetts - and an important 60th vote for his health care plan - as the top Senate Republican called the shockingly close race a verdict against the bill no matter who wins.

"This is, in effect, a referendum on the national health care bill," Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell said. "It is perfectly clear if it's unpopular in Massachusetts, it's unpopular everywhere. The American people don't want us to pass this bill."

It's a lose-lose situation for the president.

He absolutely must be seen to support Coakley, lest he lose his base. If he loses them, he's finished.

But she's toast anyway with her support collapsing, so his political prestige and clout take a hit when he is perceived as being unable to get her elected.

The Obama magic appears to be yesterday's trend.

I don’t expect the dems to lose this. It’s Massachusetts.

If they DO lose, it would be a political A-Bomb, and no dem candidate will be safe this year, no matter where they may be running for office.

LOL! I know most are concerned about SEIU/ACORN and other fraud in MA. I think the local Dems politicians in MA may be worried about the national Dems, Obama, SEIU/ACORN pulling that in MA.

Scott Brown is popular in MA. I think the MA state Dem pols think if they try to steal it from Scott - there may be a BIG backlash by the locals and the GOP or Non-Dem pols in MA may make gains in the state. If the Dems try to cheat in MA - they may have a lot to lose.

The big thing for healthcare is...no matter what the Congress is doing....the people are screaming NO....

Obama is an egotist...He did nothing in Copenhagen, didn't get the Olympics, got us GM against the will of the people....

Unless you're really, really stupid, Obama isn't for the people....he is for controlling the people.....and every p[hase of their lives.

But [Coakley's] toast anyway with her support collapsing, so his political prestige and clout take a hit when he is perceived as being unable to get her elected.

I think it's safe to say that Brown has the momentum and is peaking at just the right time (going into the final weekend before the election), but I don't understand the parallel universe that many Freepers inhabit that pronounces Coakley is 'toast.'

The polls are showing a tie within the margin of error, however. In the real world, that means either one is as likely to win as the other. There are reasons to be cautiously optimistic about Brown's chances. Then again, this is Massachusetts, and I don't recall the last time that MA voters did the right thing (I was a young child at the time). This is the electorate that kept returning a lowlife like Teddy Kennedy to power, with a smile.

I'm optimistic, but I don't know how anyone can look at the polling info with a clear mind and pronounce Coakley as 'toast.'

Starting the victory dance now is premature. It's about as likely than not that the libs will prevail. That's a hell of a lot closer than one would think, and that's a good sign in itself. It doesn't mean Coakley has no chance of winning.

Folks should sober up, donate to Brown, and when possible, work for Brown in the next couple of days. That's that.

Yeah, and Barry will be back “home” tonight, in time to tuck Sasha and Malia into bed...You Taxachusettes Dems, with your GulagCare, will have to live with coakley for the next 3 years, day in and day out. But she’s on your side! She’s one of you! Like she’s been sayin...for the last *week* or so..

Got a question for you Mass Dems. Say Coakley wins on tuesday.
When do you think you’ll see her giving a rats ass about the the people of the commonwealth of massachusettes?

Come to think of it, when do you expect to see her at *all* except on TV from Washington, standing behind Chuckie the Schmuck, at Senatorial Press announcements and attending White House parties?

Concur. Grudgingly the writer has to concede that Brown might win. If this were the reciprocal in South Carolina, they’d be gleeful.

I think the reason that we’ve not gotten any recent internals from the Brown camp is that the numbers are GOOD and they don’t want any complacency.

McConnell was very smart on Fox News this morning. Said nothing that would interrupt the dynamic or get Dems motivated.

Everything I have read about Obama recently--especially some pieces written by his supporters--makes it clear that he has a low tolerance for frustration and set-backs despite his nickname "No Drama Obama." He hates the political process (which is why he prefers to rule by Chicago-style thug diktat) and campaigning almost as much as Bill Clinton loves those things.

The more Obama gets kicked square in the teeth politically--and that's what's happening in Massachusetts--the less likely it is that he will want to run for reelection in 2012.

If Obama has a hard time summoning enthusiasm at this campaign event today--if he looks and sounds bored, tired, or listless--his candidate will remain mired in deep do-do. And when she loses, the Democrat Party nationally may well go into mortal shock.

Bring it on!

The people who got the Big O elected were quilt ridden whites and every black person with a pulse. Now he’s asking his “base” to support a white woman? The blacks don’t have any skin in this game and whites voting for a white woman lacks meaning. And his presence just reminds everyone of his attempt to socialize our health care system. Who is behind this strategy....?

In honor of Mr. Obama’s bald politicking in church (which would drive the church-state separatists at the Washington Post/Globe/Times into a fit of anger were he a Republican), I have made a $ 100 online donation to the Brown campaign. Please consider doing same, we’re all in this together. www.scottbrownforsenate.com.

I agree with your analysis of Obama himself. I think the interesting twist to the '12 theme is that Obama is not his own man; he is a front for forces darker and more powerful than he. They will not relinquish power just because he doesn't feel like running again. Perhaps they jump to a new host but I think the more likely turn of events is that they make Barry an offer he can't refuse.

I've read four threads today on Obama's frustration, his anger and his exhaustion (after a two week vacation in Hawaii, Dec. 23rd to Jan. 4th) and today is the 17th.

When will this ever end?

Just yesterday he took his wife to a birthday dinner, this morning he attended church (to rally support for Coakly....in D.C) and this afternoon he flew to Boston to rally support for Coakly.

He pawned off organizational decisions on Haiti to Bush and Clinton and skipped town to rally support for rusting machine politicians in the bluest state in the country.

Hmmmmm....my best guess for all this busy schedule is that Maine lobster's at rock bottom prices in Boston.

But the race narrowed considerably over the past week as Brown's populist message resonated with an angry and resentful electorate in an antiestablishment environment. He's energized Republicans as well as attracted disillusioned Democrats and independents worried about taxes, spending, government expansion and health care under Obama. In a race this tight, turnout will be the key.

Holy Mackerel! Did Liz Sidotti and Beth Fouhy say that? Two of the biggest kneepad obama-worshipping liberals at AP?

The wheels are really coming off.

I just watched this pukes Boston speech. Lies not withstanding, he did a good job and spiking up his drooling crowd.

More importantly, he just made this election a referendum on himself and his agenda.

On Tuesday, Brown may become a Senator (dear God, please), and Obama will become a lame duck... for the rest of the time that he and his family contaminate The Peoples White House.

In the closing hours of the campaign, Democrats pressed to make the case that Brown is not who he claims to be. They cast him as a far-right conservative funded by "tea party" supporters and they highlighted a TV interview from 2008 in which Brown seems to suggests that Obama may have been born out of wedlock.

LOL!!! Don't say that! We have a handful of purists who may get a heart attack simply by typing the words 'Scott Brown is a RINO,' LOL.  I'm glad they are just a fringe minority, but this issue regarding Scott suggesting Obama may have been born out of wedlock was raised months earlier by Michelle Obama, when she told an audience: “His [Obama] own mother, she said at the beginning of her remarks, was 'very young and very single when she had him.'”

And here is the video if someone cares to watch Scott's interview.
