Medical staff in Haiti have been forced to carry out operations without anaesthetic as they waited for assistance in treating those injured in the earthquake.
The desperation in the town of Leogane should not be under-estimated.
To the west of Port-au-Prince, it was at the epicentre of the earthquake.
Incredible as it may seem 90% of the buildings collapsed in just seven seconds.
Medicine Sans Frontiers has just arrived. They are trying to treat last Tuesday's injuries today. Until now nobody has made it to the town.
The screams of a little girl echo in the make-shift surgery that has been set up.
Her name is Sandyna Pierre and she is five. Her mother buries her head in her hands - she can't bear to see her little girl suffer any more.
A night ago a trainee nurse amputated her right hand without anaesthetic as there were no doctors.
As they treat her wounds she is held down by her feet. It is truly awful.
"We had no choice but to remove her hand," nurse Regan Ree tells me.

As a parent, I just can’t imagine the horror.

And before the earthquake, despite year after year of the accumulated billions of dollars in American and European/UN foreign aid donations, many Haitian medics operated without anaesthetic?
God help those people.
And it doesn’t matter what happened before now, as far as I’m concerned. Some folks are simply heartless.
