Gerson: The Humiliations Have Only Begun
The Washington Post ^ | January 19, 2010 | Michael Gerson

Posted on 01/19/2010 10:07:45 PM PST by Senator Goldwater

So, a Republican has convincingly won Ted Kennedy’s former Senate seat. After opposing health reform. And supporting the waterboarding of terrorists. And appearing as a nude centerfold. In a state where Democrats outnumber Republicans by three to one. And where Republicans haven’t won a Senate election since 1972. After a high-profile visit by President Obama. Who won the state by 26 points last year. But who now carries no political weight in the bluest state in the country. With vicious, public recriminations starting among Democrats even before election day. Following major losses in Virginia and New Jersey.

It means that Rahm Emanuel’s “big bang” theory of legislative liberalism is the most foolish political strategy in recent memory. It means that spending political capital on health reform instead of economic recovery and growth was a dreadful error. It means that a crisis that Obama didn’t want to waste has largely been wasted.

Obama now has the highest disapproval rating in the history of Gallup polling for a president entering his second year in office. He has been handed a series of political humiliations. If he takes all of this as motivation to “stay the course,” the humiliations have only begun.

The GOP shouldn’t waste this crisis either. They should not only be looking at picking up senate seats in November, but looking at picking up seats with conservatives, not RINO’s. How many other Scott Browns are out there?

Obama is no Clinton. He's an ideological leftist. But he's no Stalin. He's a pantywaist who inspires neither people's esteem or their fear.

... that Rahm Emanuel’s “big bang” theory ...

Hopefully someone will let this wussy, sappy-looking, evil little pr!ck that it would be wrong to let a good election go to waste.

The 9-7 wildcard NY Jets came to San Diego after playing on the road to thrash the 2nd seed San Diego Chargers in their home stadium after the Chargers went on vacation for a week.

Guess none of the brilliant sportswriters who picked San Diego by two touchdowns over New York noticed that the Jets had the #1 defense in the entire NFL.

You can't believe ANYTHING you read in a newspaper anymore.

Hillary must be cackling so hard she can barely catch her breath. She’s known all along that health care reform was a concrete wall inviting polticians to run into it headlong — she tried to do health care reform as First Lady/Back Seat Driver and learned the hard way. My guess is that she didn’t even try to warn President Obama to keep his distance from it, because she *wanted* him to run headlong into a concrete wall. He beat her in the Dem primaries and stole *her* chance to be President. She’s the type to hold a grudge.

Yesterday’s election was a referendum, among other things, on Rahm’s heavy handed manner of forcing through legislation regardless of whether the public wants it or not. Obama should fire him this week if he wants to salvage any credibility.

This may be the first State of the Union address with profanity.

The State of the Union is going to be VERY, VERY uncomfortable for Obama. If I believed he possessed one bit of humility, I would say he could use it to do a mea cullpa..a “I HEARD YOU” speech and maybe turn things around. But he won’t. Because he can’t..he’s just not wired for it.

Robert Kuttner wrote a long article about Rahm Emanuel's messing up of health care over on the Huffington Post. I advise all conservatives to go there and read it. The man who engineered all those Democratic victories learned all the wrong lessons from the 1994 debacle.
