Obama Cuts Deal that Will Reduce Social Security, Medicare and all Entitlements
by James Ridgeway
20 January 2010
The Obama administration literally collapsed yesterday. Any pretense of liberal change was washed away in a closed door deal to cut entitlements. While the Massachusetts voters were casting their ballots to install the upstart Republican Scott Brown to Ted Kennedys Senate seat, President Obama was hammering out an agreement with Democratic leaders to support a plan to issue an executive order to cut entitlements, including Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid.
The effect of this plan, if accepted by Congress, will be to override the already weakened health care reform legislation.
It represents a capitulation to conservatives in both parties, and would leave Democratic liberals accepting unconditional surrender not only on health care, but on the most basic of all New Deal programs. It reaches far beyond actions by the Reagan and Bush administration.
As the Washington Post explains this morning:
Under the agreement, President Obama would issue an executive order to create an 18-member panel that would be granted broad authority to propose changes in the tax code and in the massive federal entitlement programs including Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security that threaten to drive the nations debt to levels not seen since World War II.

Their traitors and they will NEVER give up. The only way to save this nation is to vote them all out.
This will be blamed on the conservatives and used against them. People will be dumb enough to believe it.
Ironically, one year ago the left claimed that Social Security was not in trouble.
It sounds to me like Obama is going to replace congress with an 18 member panel that he appoints. That sounds really great doesn’t it! /s.
GOP needs to get out there NOW and tell the American people what BO has done to them... especially the senior citizens.
This is disgraceful.
I can see it now. Out in the audience members will stand up holding signs “You Lie”
Silent protest is passive resistance and the way of the Black culture. The One should embrace such action
This is another abrogation of duties directed to the legislative branch that is tell the Executive how to run the government. This is like the base closing commission of years gone by.
The article is another cover piece for the administration, slight of hand, look over here while I do this over there.
Blame others for cutting entitlements, and go find political cover for raising taxes too.
This has Axelrod written all over it and anyone who buys it is naive.
The Haitians & illegals need the American seniors benefits and money. I said this would happen. Cutting Americans throats with “compaasion” and liberal TV news. Fools in America fall for it.
Somehow I really doubt that “conservatives” support surrendering the legislative authority of the Congress to an 18 member panel appointed by obama, who is finding even one party democrat majority rule a way too troublesome and slow means of ruling the people
Ah for the good ol’ days of George Bush when a 2% increase in SS was called a “cut” by democrats looking for 5%
Has AARP applauded this yet?
It really really does look like the democrats are severing the seniors from their bloc of favored constituents - but those pesky experienced citizens have lots of energy and money and lots of time to campaign - and VOTE
Pass the buck to a new authority with broad power to propose changes? What the H E double toothpick does that mean?
Hey No-bama, grow a pair and propose something yourself.
Oh that’s right, Me-shell has your do-hickies in her purse. Might as well pass it off to Dusty and Madame like before.
Hey Pubbies. Give ‘em NOTHING. Salt the fields. Shut the whole thing down til after the midterms, then impeach the base-tards.
.......It sounds to me like Obama is going to replace congress with an 18 member panel .......
What he is doing is kicking the can way on down the road.
BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAhahahahahahahahahaha! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !
"Upstart". Heh.
If Bush had done this there would have been riots in the streets.
Among other things, the “entitlements” are Ponzi schemes.
I take this report with a grain of salt. However, somebody isn’t going to get social security and no amount of whining and protesting will not change the fact that at some point, we don’t have the money to pay what people thought they’d get.
A very large amount of noise and fuss needs to be made about this.
The panel is a fraud to eliminate debate and bi-partisan compromise. It is the enactment of one-party dictatorial rule over all US entitlement programs and tens of *trillions* of dollars.
This is yet again the 0bama leftist administration UNILATERALLY telling us what “conservatives” and “The American People” do or don’t want and then screwing the us without even a token amount of debate or representation.
They don’t intend to waste the entitlement money crisis and this is their gambit.
Kill it.
Everything The Won does has Axelrod written all over it. Obama is incapable of making any decisions on his own.
The. Worst. President. Ever.
Not sure Id hold my breathe for that. The GOP seems pretty screwed up as well. To me this doesn’t seem like a dem/gop problem as much as a DC/rest of the country problem.
“Conservatives” would not favor an unconstitutional power grab by an 18 member appointed panel of obama commissars-
a “bipartisan” panel no doubt. and BOO HISS NA NA NA NA Good bye to any Republican who participates
This is cover for passing radical panicky CYA legislation in the face of looming democrat induced US bankruptcy- without the democrats having to reveal themselves and vote
Anyone see this:

I think the panel is a reflection of the lack of political leadership in this country, which cannot make the hard decisions. The politicians don't want to be held responsibile for the inevitable cuts in benefits and an increase in taxes.
A SUMMARY OF THE 2009 ANNUAL REPORTS Social Security and Medicare Boards of Trustees
Far easier to manipulate 18 rather than 435....this is unconstitutional...and hopefully will be challenged.
Sorry, disregard my last post, which is on the wrong thread !!! (I’m blonde.)
Good Lord, taking control in plain sight.
Control the economy and control everyone, with a 18 person star chamber and a token congress.
Our laziness and a congress full of power hungry game players, have delivered this on us.
The Baltimore Chronicle may want to believe that the panel will advocate cuts, but the truth is more likely the panel will be the catalyst for further tax increases.
May I safely assume that this paper is rabidly left-wing?
Maybe he’ll appoint an “Entitlements Czar”! That should help! Along with a staff of 50 in cushy offices in D.C. the new Czar should be able to “oversee” the cuts to entitlements and save jobs, and create jobs, and, and, and....
Oh wait, we already have 100 Entitlement Czars; they called Senators.
Cut grandma’s social security with an election coming. Hahahahaha Yeah, sure.
Executive Order huh? That’s gonna be his work around now?
Actually, I’m going to be a contrarian here. All of these programs need significant cuts. The US is bankrupt unless they get made. Congress cannot do it.
So long as BO doesn’t hide a bunch of nasty left wing poison in this proposal, I’d be inclined to give it tentative support. The problem is, I don’t trust him to only address those issues. He’ll try to sneak free health care for illegal immigrants, gay marriage, death panels, and cuts to missile defense into the package.
So it needs to be watched carefully. But in general principal, why should we be opposing cuts in three of the worst entitlement programs ever devised.
As I’ve poster elsewhere on FR, watch out. Brown’s win made Barry realize that if he wants a second term, he’s got to swing to the center.
And 3 years is a long time in most American’s memory!! Barry’s first year goofs will be forgotten or forgiven by then.
Yeah, let some panel do it. He ain’t got the time, the first tee is open at 1 o’clock
Obama is “messing” with the wrong people! He cuts US and WE cut him!
If they want to cut, start with the Dept. of Education and its $56 BILLION budget! That would pay for the SS gap!
I can handle a 3% or even a 5% cut in social security, but I want Obambi and congress to take the same cuts. Oh yes, and federal employee wages also.
They can reduce medicare 3-5% if they choose. I carry supplemental insurance to pick up the slack. Now the cut to the care is a different story. Trying to find a doctor today that will take medicare patients is impossible. Of course, again, having supplemental insurance really helps. But I have given up on medicare and use the VA medical services for my health needs. They love me in the VA, cause they can give me great care and charge it off to medicare and my supplemental insurance.
......Bob
Looks like Dick Morris was right, all along.
WASHINGTON — Republicans on Wednesday branded the White House deal with Democrats on a budget deficit commission as a “nothing burger” because it wouldn’t require votes on how to stem the red ink.
A tentative agreement would let President Barack Obama name the 18-member bipartisan commission. It would seek a compromise on the tax increases and spending cuts needed to tackle the deficit, which reached $1.4 trillion last year and could climb this year.
(snip)
I said the other day “Look for Obama to dissolve congress via executive order”.
Could you elaborate?
We have done it to ourselves.
We kept voting in politicians promising government can do the fish and loves trick if we would only vote for them. It works until the bubbles pop.
This is DOD bill I think, not obamacare.
Makes little difference as it is a health care issue.
TRI CARE FOR LIFE This from a google search:
http://economicspolitics.blogspot.com/2009/05/tricare-for-life-is-obama-trying-to.html
This option would help reduce the costs of TFL, as well as costs for Medicare, by introducing minimum out-of pocket requirements for beneficiaries. Under this option, TFL would not cover any of the first $525 of an enrollees cost-sharing liabilities for calendar year 2011 and would limit coverage to 50 percent of the next $4,725 in Medicare cost sharing that the beneficiary incurred. (Because all further cost sharing would be covered by TFL, enrollees could not pay more than $2,888 in cost sharing in that year.)

Dick Morris has been saying for a year that Obama will “gut” the established entitlements (SS and Medicare) in favor of benefits for illegal immigrants.
The seniors who rely (and have PAID for) Social Security and Medicare are of no use to Obama. Remember, he’s never had to deal with senior citizen parents, like most of us have.
Illegals turned into voting citizens allow Obama to CHANGE the electorate. He knows we’re pissed and he’s screwed with them. Amnesty gives him the chance to change the angry electorate, adding voters more “grateful” to HIM.
Morris has predicted this for a year; I believe it’s even in his book.
SS and medicare would be solvent if the government would just curtail its pork barrel spending and massive money giveaway to agencies, programs and foreign interests that do not benefit America.
To cut and reduce SS for seniors in any election year would be the kiss of death for those who support it.
A trip to the grocery store Tuesday saw cost of food skyrocketing again.

It is too bad we have had previous presidents establish the policy of granting amnesty in the past.
With the unemployment situation, Obama might find a bit more resistance than the last attempt of amnesty by Bush.
Constitutionally speaking, all tax legislation MUST begin in the HOUSE, not the White House either.
Excellent news, if true. Big if.
Thanks. I haven’t been following him.
