'Cashiers, Baggers, Deli, Bakery and Grocery Clerks' (Publix hires foreign workers in Florida)

These are more "jobs Americans won't do," according to Publix supermarkets. In southwest Florida, where there's 14 percent unemployment, the supermarket chain is importing Brazilians and Peruvians on J-1 "cultural exchange" visas. Unbelievable. I'd boycott the chain if I lived down there.

Sounds like something Marco Rubio should get on top of.

When Obama promises to pay his supporter’s rent and buy their gasoline, why should any of them want to work as a butcher, baker, or candlestick maker at a Publix grocery store?

The Democrats create an “entitlement society” and refusal to work is a natural consequence of such a policy.

And the more they don’t work, the more free stuff they get! It is a great gig.

Also, this chain recently replaced Pearl Harbor Day with the Islamic New Year for December 7th on the calendar they pass out. Shameful, but I see a pattern developing with this store.

Yep. Might be time to start giving them some more attention. Do they own other chains in other parts of the country?

here is what a J1 visa is

Immigration Library: J-1 Visa
The J-1 Visa or Exchange Visitor Program was first implemented in 1961 as part of the Mutual Educational and Cultural Exchange Act of 1961. The motivation behind this act was to promote the understanding of other cultures by the people of the United States and likewise the understanding of the America culture by people of other countries through educational and cultural exchanges.

A J-1 Visa is a non-immigrant visa available to aliens that fall under the designation of “Exchange Visitor”. To obtain a J-1 Visa, your sponsor must be accredited through the Exchange Visitor Program designated by the U.S. State Department.

Certain classes of J-1 “Exchange Visitor” require that the alien return to his/her home country or country of last permanent residence for a period of two (2) years after the completion of the J-1 status if: 1) the J-1 program is financed by the U.S. government or the government of the alien’s home country; 2) the home country of the alien has a shortage of people with skills that the alien has; or 3) the alien receives medical training as interns or residents.

How does Publix get away with this?

As far as “work American’s won’t do”...here’s an article about a Publix bag boy who just happens to be an unemployed MBA. He’s working to show his kids that All work is honorable.

It is possible that they cannot get Americans for these jobs. If you have teens either living off mom and dad or welfare, laid off union workers who wouldn’t touch these jobs, people depending on welfare or living on their savings and UI insurance until they get a job in their field, and many, many older professionals who would not take these jobs for many reasons, I can see why they would go unfilled.

I’m not trying to defend this store. I just can see how they might not have enough applicants to fill these positions. If I am wrong, then I will gladly join you in the pitchfork aisle. ;-)

I think there are restaurants and amusement parks in the North Woods of Wisconsin that have used this visa. I was fishing in Minocqua a few years back and the waiters at one local restaurant were all Polish. It seemed there were no teens in town; most service personnel were either Eastern European or retired locals.

You might be right BUT I can tell you here in Dallas which has much lower unemployement that Florida a grocery chain is opening stores and for thousands and thousands of applicants for hundreds of jobs. They typically pay $10.00 plus some bennies. So I am suspicious they can’t get citizens to apply.
Before I’d let a company do this I’d go to the welfare rolls and get able bodied people to get off their ass and work.

You are quite correct. The days are gone when teens used after school jobs for spending money and to buy those things their parents couldn't afford for them.

Next time someone is going on and on about those jobs that are being filled by illegals at the cost of Americans just ask them if they know someone who is ready and willing to go to work for $10 an hour, with few if any benefits. I have been doing this for the last few months and have yet to find someone who says they know someone in their personal acquaintance who is out of work and will take a job at McDonalds or WalMart or Burger King, etc. And they won't go to work for the phone company doing the manual labor of laying cable, or a lawn service mowing and raking and picking up the trash.

I don't know the answer, but I do know there are lots of jobs that Americans simply won't take, even if they are unemployed.

There is more information at the linked link (news-press dot com which you can’t touch with a ten-foot pole on FR). Numbers of hires, description of visa program, Publix saying it only needs temporary workers and Americans don’t want to do that; out of work Americans saying sure I’d do that.

Point is, you can always find Americans. Maybe you’d have to pay more. Maybe you’d have to offer benefits. These days you probably wouldn’t.

Big American corporations will cry worker shortage forever and try to get Congress to let them hire cheap foreign labor.

Florida congressman Robert Wexler (what is it with Florda?) introduced the 2009 Nurse Relief Act, claiming a shortage of more than 100,000 nurses. There may be 100,000 unfilled positions but that’s because the hospitals and nursing homes have them open and won’t fill them. Experienced nurses are having trouble and new nurses are begging for jobs. Pretty easy to figure out who’s giving him the campaign contributions.
