Posted on 01/21/2010 6:46:33 PM PST by La Lydia
Air America, the long-suffering progressive talk radio network, abruptly shut down on Thursday, bowing to what it called a very difficult economic environment. The chairman of Air America Media, Charlie Kireker, said in a statement that the company would file under Chapter 7 bankruptcy to carry out an orderly winding-down of the business...
The closing did not come as a surprise. Air America, which began six years ago and has 100 affiliated stations, cycled through a number of owners and never found its financial footing. It first filed for bankruptcy protection in 2006 but managed to stay on the air.
The fact of the matter was, it was always a very challenging business proposition, and it never had the right management, said Sam Seder, who hosted programs on Air America until last year.
Although it lacked a substantial audience, the network catapulted a number of progressive media personalities into stardom, most notably Rachel Maddow, who now anchors a prime-time program on the cable news channel MSNBC. Al Franken, now a Democratic senator from Minnesota, hosted an Air America show from 2004 to 2007, before running for office...
It would be a shame if the world sees the failure of Air America as representing the failure of progressive talk radio, said Michael Harrison, the editor of Talkers Magazine, a talk radio publication...
Air America started to play rerun programming rather suddenly Thursday evening. The company said it would sign off completely next Monday night.

Yep. It’s Bush’s fault.
This is shocking and unexpected, right?
Dey should juss ax King Obamba fo a bailout!
Talk about a GREAT WEEK!!!!!!
Bold emphasis yours?
They knew what the USSC was going to do to McCain/Feingold today so they cut their losses ~ which must have been doubly hard for the mob of Leftwingtards around that enterprise.
Now the money will go directly to their candidates.
The good news is this will probably force some major housekeeping at the Washington Post. They've been kept in business by Warren Buffett's Leftwingtard buddies ~ now they don't need to.
Over the next few months watch the loss of old line newspapers and magazines accelerate!
Air America was still on the air???????
Randy going to have to wash beer glasses
No kidding, huh? Thank God!
It is to me, I thought they were already off the air.
That’s what I was thinking.
OK, OK, yes... OK... I actually mentioned this around my small circle of friends and they ALL said something like ‘never heard of it’ so...
Don’t celebrate guy . The Fairness Doctrine is next , half of it is already in planning and ready to roll. Obama KNOWS the only way he will get his way is to stifle the opposition.
Look into the plans for Fairness Doctrine is you want to really get sick..Mark my words they have BIG BIG plans already in the work to take down talk radio.
Air America today, MSNBC tomorrow, the NY Times the day after.
They just ran out of time before they could pass a law to force us to listen to Air America. Remember the Fairness Doctrine?
It is a strange sort of logic. Air America was important even if hardly anyone listened to it. Maddox has gone on to another program that hardly anyone watches. I guess that proves that you can be important even if your not important. Liberal logic makes my head hurt.
Air America going off the air is like a tree falling in the woods. Nobody will hear it or notice it.
