Deposed president Manuel Zelaya will be allowed to travel to the Dominican Republic under the status of "distinguished guest". During a visit yesterday to that country's capital of Santa Domingo, President-elect Porfirio Lobo announced that soon after he is inaugurated as Honduras' next president, he will provide a letter of safe passage for Mr. Zelaya, his family, and his closest advisers.
An agreement facilitating the deal was signed by Mr. Lobo and Dominican president Leonel Fernández. The announcement helps lay to rest speculation about Mr. Zelaya's near-term plans following the change of power in Honduras on January 27. Mr. Zelaya welcomed the news and recognized the move by Mr. Lobo as a "good gesture" and "good effort at national reconciliation with which he willing to help". He also characterized as being in "good form" the presence, as witnesses, of former presidential candidates Felicito Avila, César Ham, and Elvin Santos at the signing.
That’s not good. I bet Bambi put pressure on the DR to take Zelaya.
Thanks, very interesting.
Is he hoping to sneak into Haiti and takeover once the international contingent leaves? Offer his “leadership?”
Given what has gone before, I think the Haitians would be better off if he DID sneak in and take over.
