CA: Officials: Threat Of Mudslides Still Looms ( Last storm lingers over Los Angeles yet)

LA CANADA FLINTRIDGE, Calif. (CBS) ―

[

Storm-battered Southern California is beginning to dry out after a wild week of storms that flooded streets, spawned at least a few tornados, and left a trail of damage, but mudslides could still be a concern, but with predictions for more showers Friday, the supersaturated ground threatened to send damaging debris downhill.

Officials have said the risk of mudslides can last up to 72hours after the rains have stopped.

Hundreds of evacuees forced from homes in foothill communities are expected to learn sometime Friday whether it's safe for them to return home.

Authorities said an extensive flood-control system was working, but many of the basins designed to catch debris-laden runoff from fire-scarred mountains were full and evacuations remained necessary.

They insisted that residents of endangered homes should obey evacuation orders.

"It's not safe to say that we're out of the clear just yet," Gail Farber, the Los Angeles County Public Works director.

The first storm has hit southwest Colorado. They’re getting about three feet of snow in Durango. Looks like if anything just flurries up here. That’s OK. They need the moisture more.

I agree. It's so they can tell us when and how much water we can use. Other reports say we have already had more rainfall these 3 storms than recent previous entire seasons.

That looks like Phoenix yesterday...it’s been on and off today...had a toranado touch down in Scottsdale Desert Ridge area last eve. Barret-Jackson had damage to classic cars..their huge tents and poles blew onto the 101 freeway.. I’m sure if you are still getting it..it’s on it’s way to me...again.

Tajgirvan: I saw and appreciated your comments yesterday, just as you know couldn’t get on forum all afternoon.

Stuff always lingers in the LA Basin for a day or so...it is it’s own special mixing bowl cause of the ridge of mountains.

This week’s rains remind me of similar occurrences in the fifties, sixties, eighties and early 2000’s —

Nothing dramatic here on San Fernando Valley floor — sure, some flooded streets/intersections and fallen tree limbs, and of course there is ALWAYS the threat of mudslides and floods in beaches and near burn areas, but don’t let the media tell you the entire L.A. basin and vicinity is floating away. Not happening.

On Fox News they showed a dog rescue in what they called the L.A. Rive...looks like what we call flood control canals in AZ. Good sized dog had to be plucked from the moving water from a heli. Poor dog...poor rescue guy...took several bites before getting a good hold on him.

I’m in the SF Valley — during a break in the rain this a.m. I dumped at least 7 inches of water out of a big planter I had sitting empty in the yard. Probably not a very accurate gauge of rainfall but it’s all I’ve got.

Yes, SF Valley is the same — we were rain-free for several hours before noon today — and last night between about 11 and 3 a.m. there was nothing going on, either. Even with these strong storms, we’ve had periods of no rain off an on for an hour or more at at time all week.
