They are. Tefilin is the Hebrew name. Phylacteries is the Greek word for them that has come to English.

Not being Jewish, I’m not familiar with all the ins and outs of Jewish tradition. All I know about phylacteries is that they are leather boxes containing scrolls of parts of the Torah.
Are the boxes sewn shut, or could it have been possible for the kid to have opened them, and shown the cabin crew that they contained nothing but paper?
