The executive editor of the National Enquirer says he plans to enter his paper's work on the John Edwards scandal for a Pulitzer Prize.
Don't laugh.
"It's clear we should be a contender for this," Barry Levine said by phone Thursday, hours after the former presidential candidate admitted what the paper had been reporting all along: that he is the father of Rielle Hunter's baby. "The National Enquirer, a supermarket tabloid, was able to publish this reporting."
While the staff never doubted its reports that Edwards had fathered a daughter with his former campaign videographer, Levine said, "there is vindication, finally. Mr. Edwards kept the story alive much longer than it needed to be kept alive with his denials. He has only himself to blame."
While the Enquirer stories may or may not be prize-winning material -- the paper's most significant disclosures came in 2007 and 2008, and this year's Pulitzers will honor material published in 2009 -- there is no question that the tabloid scooped the rest of the media world.
When the Enquirer first reported in 2007 that Edwards had had an affair with Hunter, the former North Carolina senator dismissed the account as tabloid trash. The rest of the media, having no independent proof, steered clear of the story, even as Edwards, aided by his cancer-stricken wife Elizabeth, was mounting an aggressive campaign for the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination.
In August 2008, after being knocked out of the campaign, Edwards admitted to ABC's "Nightline" that he had been lying about the affair. But he didn't come entirely clean. Asked about the Enquirer cover that showed him with the baby during a late-night visit to a Beverly Hills hotel, Edwards denied paternity, saying: "Published in a supermarket tabloid. Woodward and Bernstein’s paper was scooped because it WANTED to be scooped.
The MSM kept Edwards’ campaign viable in the primary to keep Hillary in a 3 way race for delegates.
Just as the Houston Chronicle could not possibly have been blindsided about their boy Ken Lay’s Enron. They partnered with him on behalf of the downtown business establishment and securing Enron Field for the Astros.
Who cares. This is nothing but a distraction from things that really matter to America.

Media Schadenfreude and Media Shenanigans
Remember when the MSM said “nothing to see, move along...”?
Wasn’t there a criminal investigation into the fraudulent use of campaign funds to pay John Edwards’ child support? He had a staffer claim to be the daddy.
Now this would mean that Mr. Edwards lied in a criminal investigation of his campaign. Culture of corruption that rose to the very top ranks (the candidate himself).
He should be facing JAIL TIME for his act of perjury. He compounded the charges.
Well I agree with him. Why not let the Inquirer have it? The Pulitzer prize is a joke anyway.

Why not? If Obama can win the Nobel Peace Prize why can’t the Enquire win the Pulitzer Prize? Fits right in with current trends.
This shows how the MSM kept the truth from the voters in a Presidential race. THAT’S why we care.
Fraudulent use of campaign donations and perjury in the subsequent investigation.
And the MSM KNEW about his affair. They covered it up just as his own wife did. They were perfectly willing to lie (by omission) to see him in the White House over McCain.
The media covered up Obama’s smoking habit as well. They don’t bother anymore. He won.
Not entirely.
It’s not important because of the story, it’s important because it exposes the MSM for covering up for liberal democrats. It exposes their obvious bias they claim to never have, it proves they have no objectivity where liberal democrats are concerned. And the vast majority of MSM knew and was covering it up, not just one paper.
This is where the value of the story is.
Yeah, they lied.
If national media covered up sleaze John Edwards missteps, just think what we still don’t know about Barry Omama.
It really matters to America when the media pursues a hidden agenda and refuses to inform the public (ie, refuses to do the very thing they exist to do) about a candidate for the presidential nomination.

In terms of honest and open reporting the National Enquirer has long ago surpassed the likes of the NYTimes, Time Mag, WA Post, and the San Fran Chron just to name a few.
