Can We Please Stop Labeling Liberals “Elite?” (Republicans outscore Democrats)
Center for Individual Freedome ^ | 1/17/2010 | Timothy H. Lee

In a survey released October 14, 2009 – just three months ago – the liberal-leaning Pew Research Center ran a “News IQ Quiz.”

It probably didn’t surprise the Pew staff to learn that a “partisan knowledge gap” existed between Democrats and Republicans.

But it surely horrified them to realize that the gap favored… Republicans.

On fully ten of twelve “News IQ Quiz” questions asked, Republicans demonstrated deeper basic knowledge than Democrats, with respondents tied on one question and Democrats leading on only one of the twelve.

In other words, the hard survey data confirms what anyone familiar with socio-economic issues already suspected: if anyone earns the label “elite,” it is actually more conservative Americans.

Elitism is a view that some people —because of their blood, wealth, status, skills, or expertise—are above of everybody else. Liberals tend to hold this view. The Pew results point out to something else, that is, Republicans are more informed and attuned to current affairs.

How could anyone who pays attention (and isn’t on the payroll) be a Democrat?

Not to belittle the author, but to most conservatives, the term elite (insert photo of Dr. Evil making quotation gesture) is attached as a derogatory adjective.

It has nothing to do with IQ scores or knowledge. It is about arrogance, a superiority aire, and money. Thinking they are better than the people, know better than the people, care more than the people etc etc etc.

Of the top 50 richest members of congress, 28 are Democrats and 22 are Republicans.

Of the top 10 richest, only 2 are Republicans.

Actually, the rich are almost always smarter than about 4/5 of people and less smart than about 1/5, because the top fraction of the population tends to find the activities involved in commerce and finance mind-numbingly dull, and go into academic pursuits or technical areas that while lucrative will not make one rich.

Most of us who have chosen the academic route in life, are alas, while very smart tend to not be very wise and assume that what is good for an academician whose love of particle physics, botany, Medieval history, Georgian architecture, . . . or in my case mathematics is such that so long as they are provided with a reasonably comfortable living they will pursue their love without regard for further compensation is good for everyone. Thus academicians tend to foolishly assume that having some fiduciary look after ones material needs on one’s behalf would be a good thing for everyone and end up being socialists and looking down on people who pursue commerce. This view is of course just as deadly to the prosperity of the nation and the world as running a university as if it were a commercial enterprise is to the pursuit of knowledge.

We don’t actually have very many true liberals these days. Thomas Jefferson was a liberal; so was Abraham Lincoln. What we have today though are Socialists. They like calling themselves Progressives, but they’re just Marxists and Communists hiding behind a a PC identity, because it makes them “feel” better about themselves. As for elite, elite is a term reserved for the best of the best, and today’s liberals are anything but elite.

I have a theory about liberals.

They have a philosophical attitude, “People shouldn’t be allowed to do that”. If you talk to a lib, the odds are, in one way or another, you’ll hear it.

To me it smacks of elitism, that I know better than other people.

Your analysis seems about right to me, yet I think that it would be nice to have a different word to express that Liberal attitude other than elite, or elitism. It shouldn’t be too hard to make that change, because it isn’t the liberals who are calling themselves that.

Exactly. Since when did being informed equate to being an “elite”??

After much consideration, I have come up with the proper term for liberals:

assholes

poseurs

human hemmorhoids

traitorous vermin

self-annointed

superciliously fatuous

SNEETCHES.

They just *ARE* superior. It's self-evident: so much so that if you ask them for proof, the question itself designates you as unworthy of an answer.

After all, they have stars upon thars.

Cheers!

With a few exceptions it isn’t just the democrats I think of as elite. It’s most of the people in Washington.

I think calling them the “self-described elite” is perfect.

They WANT to be elite and they WANT to mock the rest. While patronizing the ones they feel are MOST pathetic.
